#50446 Can anyone suggest to me a movie like Prometheus?

Posted by ElixrAffixed on 27 June 2013 - 02:25 PM in Sci Fi

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Event Horizon, Dark City, and Stargate all have that similar science fiction edge, many dealing with its collison with humanity. And if you're willing to go from space to the sea, Cameron's The Abyss features similar themes.

I love you.

I have different likes and it all depends on my mood. I too like Studio Killers, they're pretty amazing. I'm a fan of many things, many styles, many genres.

Joywave is great. Their experimental fusion of genres is quite seamless at times. I'm a big fan of their tune 'Golden State.' Other great experimental acts include Caribou (check out his 2010 album, Swim - particularly the songs 'Jamelia' and 'Kaili.' If you're looking for a beautifully strange straddle between spoken word and singing, listen to Listener's song 'Wooden Heart.' In fact, the entire album is great. Lost Animal has a new record, 'Ex Tropical.' His song 'Say No to Thugs' is worth a listen. I'm also a really big fan of The Knife, who also has a new one out, entitled 'Shaking the Habitual.' Most of these mentioned are fused experimentations as well, but center mostly on electronica. If anyone wants suggestions to older music or different styles, just mention it.

By the way, Elbow is great. Their song Switching Off remains my favorite.

I've been jamming to the new Kid Cudi album, indicud. Most of the album is pretty good but he strayed away from his older down to earth style and it leaves me a little disappointed. I've been digging on Trinidad James lately as well but I'd say he has more a novelty feel than a serious feel.

I agree; Kid Cudi's recent album did little for me. Now, Wale's newest record, The Gifted, is pretty decent, particularly songs such as 'LoveHate Thing' featuring Sam Dew, and of course his Rihanna duet, 'Bad,' for which we were already familiar with in a sense.

Okay, so I'm a musical fanatic, as you'll learn soon enough. I'm curious to know what everyone is into, currently? My tastes are rather complex and vast, but at the moment, I'm really enjoying the latest Iron & Wine record, 'Ghost on Ghost.' It's of course no 'Shepherd's Dog,' but there are a few great ideas on the LP, including the infectious 'Low Light Buddy of Mine.'

Studio Killers have an intriguing debut out this year, self-titled. Be sure to check out the fun and vivacious 'Ode to the Bouncer.' Notice the Pink Floyd references in one of the bridges.

I'm also enjoying the odd and eccentric Mojo Juju. Her self-titled solo debut released in 2012 is a great throwback for a modern day blues record. Highlights include her fantastic 'I Put a Spell on You' and the great 'Full Moon on Budapest.'

I can offer plenty more suggestions if anyone wants a specific genre or style, either new or old. Looking forward to reading what others enjoy.

Thank you! Sorry for having missed that.

#50424 Mama's Family on DVD?

Posted by ElixrAffixed on 27 June 2013 - 10:35 AM in Misc. Movies and T.V.

So, I know there was an edited season or two distributed by Warner Bros. a few years back, but of course the entirety of the series has never seen an official release, which is rather unfortunate. Anyone else an incredulous admirer of this old program? It was always a favorite of mine during its heyday. Hopefully a company like Shout Factory or Lionsgate picks up the licensing for it someday.

Forgive me if I've missed the area itself or any adventitious discussion in relation to music, but I'm quite the music 'nerd' and was thinking about the benefits of including a dedicated corner for it somewhere.

#50417 The Prose Locker #1: Vietnam 101

Posted by ElixrAffixed on 27 June 2013 - 10:23 AM in Writing

This is going to be an ongoing series of my prosaic poetry for anyone who may be interested in that sort of thing.

'Vietnam 101'

Fifty-five years into a Christian'd century, a group of vegetational cultivators fuss over the colonial colonel who's breaking his back in order to breed defense from their Buddhism; their tent-pole is of course weakened by the knot of an American noose.

Four million pairs of sandals were exchanged for leathered high-tops, but it did not increase the height of any particular point of view. The eternal message was a mimicry--the worst kind of scream--quickly annihilated by the whispered demands of its opponent. Any movement to aid the king would perish for the sake of mercy. Their gift is in dehumanizing their involvement; they publish their children into the foreground in hopes of steering the barrel from their father's mothering protest.

Johnson sat plotting on presidential bones, but starved the story of its importance. The billion dollar paper chase had just begun--flaring its blond arms in front of a series of drawn stars, as if to communicate peace to the Earth's accountant. Genocide... permanent and penniless, though profit still preyed upon by the predicated pilots of Rolling Thunder.

The last life to lose was taken by a boy who was born in a draft--the color of communism forever foreign to his eye. The Western region would later warrant a rescue; ready to die, it finally fell victim to an impenetrable poet who spoke through a camouflaged radio. He, alone, collapsed the camaraderie of united sons--his hallucinogenic effect tying their shoelaces to the leg of a Vietnamese pig.

#50340 List of awesome horror films please

Posted by ElixrAffixed on 26 June 2013 - 02:48 PM in Misc. Movies and T.V.

When it comes to horror, I prefer the more psychologically-driven tales. Some solid, even underrated suggestions would be Frailty, starring Bill Paxton and Matthew McConahey; Cronenberg's remake of The Fly from 1987 can be quite terrifying. The Gate, featuring a young Stephen Dorff, isn't necessarily psychological in nature, but a great and effective 80's horror film. The Entity, The Horror Show, Identity, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, John Carpenter Presents Body Bags (great anthology), Videodrome are also all great titles.

#50338 Downgrading to win7 from win8 is a pain in the ass

Posted by ElixrAffixed on 26 June 2013 - 02:10 PM in Software

Windows 8 really features plenty of positive and useful ideas, but like many reviewers have warned, there seems to be an odd marriage between the Metro, or tile, user interface and the desktop. If only this marriage was a bit more ceremonious between the two when using it in a desktop environment, fewer folks would find reason to complain. Microsoft will iron out their faults in time, but the learning curve or, quite simply, the change it has brought to the market may remain as an act of futility on their part to some critics, but it was certainly a necessary change, one of which has brought some nice things to the table.
