#86684 Magic the Gathering Card game

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 09:09 PM in Tabletop Games

My decks are usually very creature focus. A lot of buffing. I don't play tournaments anymore but I still play casually at the local game corner. My most recent deck is a sliver but since I play off the grid, our games aren't restricted by tournament decks. I also still have my first deck though I don't play it anymore: squirrels. I have a squishy part of me that is fond of MTG dragons and goblins and when you can use one as sacrificial buffers for the other, you have my favorite kind of deck. As for my favorite colors to run, that's easy enough; red and green.

#86678 X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 07:11 PM in Misc. Movies and T.V.

I really enjoyed the first X-Men movie. And X2 was pretty dopetacular too. And then there was the third one. Ugh! Don't get me started. As for the Wolverine movies...meh. It's not that I don't think Hugh Jackman plays a good Wolverine. He really, really does. But I also don't think that he is irreplaceable. The right actor could play Wolverine and make me forget all about Jackman. Patrick Stewart as Professor X is just sheer genius. I don't think he is any more irreplaceable as Jackman as Wolverine but I think they would definitely be bigger shoes to fill. The same thing goes for Magneto. Nightcrawler in X2 was simply amazing and Mystique was bad ass as always.

And then there was First Class. YUCK! What garbage! There was absolutely nothing about that movie that I enjoyed. Nothing. Other than the effects because, you know, Hollywood magic. The only redeeming quality First Class has is that it didn't suck nearly as bad as Last Stand.

I wanted to like Wolverine Origins but I hated Deadpool with a passion. In fact, I hated him more in that movie than I do in the comics. At least in the comics he is potentially entertaining. I actually rather enjoyed The Wolverine. I don't think it was great or mind blowing. But it was fun and definitely worthy of the X-Men franchise.

And now on to Days of Future Past....I liked it. I think I liked it because from what I can gather, it pretty much null and voids Last Stand and maybe even but not entirely First Class. That's what happens when you start messing with time. Paradoxes galore!

#86675 Ultimate Villain Showdown

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Those men are boring. I prefer a man who purges the world with fire so he can rebuild it in his image after he's done. :) AKA Latveria. Sometimes you have to start small. Lol

Welcome to the forum!
(P.S. if you love "who would win" arguments, you must despise Smash Bros., where an anemic fitness instructor can beat the crap out of King Kong Jr. by hitting him with a soccer ball.)

DO hate Super Smash Bros. but not because of that. I hate it because I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally suck at it. :P  As I suck at most fighting games.

Just to clarify, I would like to point out that I don't like who would win arguments. I enjoy who would win discussions;)

#86624 Anybody Play Skyrim?

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 08:39 AM in Video Games

Skyrim!!!  :D

I have so many characters that it's stupid and they each serve their own purpose. One character I have for the sole purpose of uber-leveling him to the point of godhood. He's a Nord and I used the Conan the Barbarian formula that is all over the web. I named him King Conan and he specializes in, well, everything. He is Dragonborn, sublime thief, master assassin, seasoned warrior, and a mighty mage to boot. I know Conan never used magic but that's not the point. I use him for nothing more than the thrill of power leveling and smashing my enemies by any means that strikes my fancy. Once I get him to level 100, I'm going to use my contact in Riften to change his face and make him appear older with wrinkles and gray hair. When all is said and done, he'll have more money than the Empire, a house in every available location, and treasure out the wazoo. Why? Because Conan, that's why.

And then I have a few character who I've made for various purposes of making the game more challenging beyond just raising the difficulty. Like gimping, I suppose. Some rules I like to abide by are those like No Gold (I can collect all the gold I want but I can't use it to buy anything and so any potions I use I must make or find and the same goes for armor and weapons) and then I even have some more strict rules such as my orc who I will not allow to loot armor from anyone who is not a Nord, Imperial, or another orc. After all, how would heavy armor on a wood elf fit on an orc? I even have a mage whom I've determined has a phobia of "medicine" and so she refuses to drink potions and can only recover health by eating food (she also does not eat alchemical ingredients and so I've taken to referring to this as the Glutton rule). Needless to say, she does a lot of cooking as you'd be surprised by some of the benefits you can get from prepared meals such as veggie soup. I even have a high elf who focuses on two-handed, alteration (no armor), conjuration, and enchanting (needless to say, he does a lot of prep before battle). One of his preps is that he NEVER goes in to battle without first consuming alcohol and the only way he ever recovers fatigue is by consuming more alcohol. Needless to say he goes through a lot as swinging that giant hammer really wears him down and the side-effect of alcohol is crappy stamina regeneration. At first I called him a Drunken Hammer Mage but now I've taken to just calling him my Hammered Mage. Most of these characters though are optimized for the purposes of making the game more challenging and so I have to approach each one with strategy in mind as opposed to playing to my favorite skills.

And then I have those character whom I straight role play with. Making the game more or less challenging comes and goes depending on the character as I never "gimp" myself for purposes of gameplay but rather play my character a certain way based on the story I've built for them. Such as my "paladin" who despises the undead and has a fascination with the dwemer so she collects everything she can from books to artifacts and even random junk. She has even taken up smithing on the side in the hopes that she will some day be able to make (and enchant) her own dwemer armor. I follow a few rules to make them game more "realistic" but I don't go to the extreme. I limit my fast travel use but will never opt out of it completely. It really comes down to on-the-moment judgement calls. As a paladin, she uses a mace, a shield, heavy armor, and restoration spells to heal and repel undead. She also uses conjuration but never raises an undead or summons a dremora but rather sticks to the three atronachs (usually the fire atronach). But when she is exploring dwemer ruins (it's her "hobby"), she replaces her mace and shield with a two-handed warhammer and her trusty crossbow.

Last but not least, I have a few character whom I've made based off of some of my favorite characters found in fiction. So far I only have three and they call come from the mind of R.A. Salvatore. Obould Many-Arrows (an orc king), Harkle Harpell (a werewolf-wizard), and Artemis Entreri (a master assassin with an enchanted, life-stealing dagger). I just wish there was a way to work his magical crown in there which is able to shoot fireballs. I've been considering making a certain famous archer......

*takes a breath* And I'm done!

#86618 Who's is your favorite character from the X-Men Comics?

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 06:12 AM in Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels

Mystique. I think she is an awesome example of everything a strong female character should be. She's fiercely independent in her attitude and can kick some serious ass and yet these attributes aren't so overwhelming that she comes across as under-feminized who is only strong because she acts like a man. It makes me sad when I see people (especially writers) who seem to think that a strong female character means associating them with macho attributes. A strong female character is made up of all the stuff that makes any other strong character. It's just that she has lady parts.  ^_^

Besides. I would love to have her powers. She has the ability to just hide from the world whenever she feels like it. And I loved her character in the movies (before First Class).

And then there's Rogue, Magneto, Nightcrawler and Angel. Among others.

#86616 Ultimate Villain Showdown

Doctor Doom facing off against the Borg from Star Trek TNG! Doom is one of my favorite villains but I think I would like to see the Borg assimilate him just because of how bad ass it would be! You thought Borg Picard looked cool? Wait until you see Assimilated Doom! The Borg Queen would take him in to the Collective thinking she won and then Doom would take over!  B)

#86615 I am now the proud owner of a pawn shop PS3

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 05:45 AM in Video Games

Me tooooo!  :D  It's been so long since I've owned a console that I had to make sure I did not over-binge on the game for the first month I had it (it's only been a few weeks and I've already failed at this). I'm a huge RPG fan when it comes to console gaming so for that I would suggest the Mass Effect trilogy (the only way to get the first game for the PS3 is to buy the set). The combat system really reminds me of Dragon Age 2 which is a huge plus in my book. I also really love Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It's fast-paced and visually stunning and the bright colors and fast movements helps to keep my attention.  ;)

Somebody already mentioned the Uncharted games. I definitely second that. They are something of a free-range, parkour action type and they have an amazing story that boarders on something of a modern day Indiana Jones. I've only played the first two so far but I recently saw number three pre-played for super cheap.

Coming from someone who really does not get in to FPS games, I adored The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and count it as one of my all time favorite games. Doom 3 is also a lot of fun but it is nothing compared to Riddick.

I'm not sure how you feel about "sports entertainment" but I also really love WWE 2K14. I haven't played a WWE game since their Smackdown vs. RAW titles. I don't enjoy it like I did back in the day but I still keep up-to-date on the happenings in sports entertainment.

And as much as I suck at them, I would suggest some pretty awesome fighters if you're in to those kinds of games. I'm itching to get the Budokai 3 HD remake but in case you're not in to DBZ then I might suggest Marvel vs. Capcom 3, MK vs. DCU, and Soul Calibur IV or V (I personally prefer 4 but 5 is a lot of fun).

So there you have it. My two sense.  :P

#86614 Help! Where do I begin?

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 05:27 AM in Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels

So way back when my world was all sunshine and puppy-dog tails before I learned about things like budgeting and politics, I collected comic books. This was during the glorious 90s. At least, they were (mostly) glorious for me. I still have a long box or two of those comics left and I have recently busted them out and started going through them again. Now I really want to get back in to it. I'm not a "collector" or anything like that but just like my novels, I would like to keep those issues that I read and add them to my collection. So I want to collect them again but I'm not a collector. Confused yet? I think it's a paradox that only comic readers really understand.

Alas! I am overwhelmed by the huge overhauls that each major company (Marvel and DC) has gone through. Things such as The New 52 and whatever the heck Marvel is doing with what appears to be their re-introduction of the Secret Wars or something like it have me positively confuddled as to where I should start.

When it comes to DC, I would really like to stick with the New 52 and work my way onward from there. Some of the character who I am most interested in are Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Flash. I'm a long time fan of Batman and I'm pretty sure where I can figure out where to start with him. After watching Smallville, I've recently come to better appreciate Superman as a character as where I use to hate his guts. That's right. I was one of them. A Superman hater.

As for Marvel.....I don't even know what to do. Marvel is definitely my favored brand. There was actually a time in my comic reading days where Batman was the only DC character I had anything to do with. But I find myself confounded by all of these different "universes" and all that jazz. What is up with this whole "Ultimate universe" and what does it exist in opposition to? The Marvel characters I would really like to get in to are Spider-Man (he's my all time favorite super hero and I feel a nerdy sort of guilt for having not followed the character for so long), Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and the X-Men (I've come to notice that I tend to prefer X-Men arcs in which they aren't dealing with other characters from the Marvel Universe such as the Avengers, Spider-Man, and other non-mutant types).

So there you have it. I'm at a loss. I think I might actually have a better handle on where to start with DC than with Marvel which is surprising considering my preferred affiliation. DC seems pretty straight forward in its motivations concerning the New 52 (from what I can tell, it was just an excuse to wipe the slate clean and start over). But Marvel just has me at all sorts of a loss. I was working at a bookstore when the Civil War story arc started and I remember really wanting to get in to that but the time was not right financially and probably still isn't but I'm tired of waiting. I'll start slow if I must.

So there you have it! What do you guys and gals think? And don't let my "specifications" limit your suggestions. I have a wide pallet in my comic tastes. I was just giving you an idea of what I most enjoy.

And a question of less importance: does anybody have any experience with Marvel Unlimited? Is it worth the $9.99 a month? Is there any way to do with them what I do with Netflix which is to pay for a few months, cancel my subscription, and then pick it back up later on when I feel like they might have some more selections? I would really prefer to have physical copies but I'm not against reading some issues online, even if they're older.

#86613 Any horror fans on here?

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 05:02 AM in Misc. Movies and T.V.

I hafta admit, I have a soft, squishy spot for the macabre and when it comes to my favorite slasher flicks, I think some real touch make-up beats out CGI blood and gore any day. As someone who respects a good story and can even forgive a lot of atrocities so long as the plot is solid, I can say that I don't give a hoot about the writing when it comes to a slasher flick. Thanks to that, some of my favorites are the Hatchet movies, Hostel, The Devil's Rejects, and a few of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies. I also really love a good suspense or psychological thriller but whenever someone actually uses the word horror, my mind immediately goes to the guts and gore of the slasher genre. Maybe I'm just a twisted person like that. Or maybe the rest of the world is just too vanilla. Those movies exist. I can't be the only twisted one, apparently.  ^_^

Oh! I also especially love From Dusk Til Dawn. I'm not so much a fan of the ones that came after but I still watch them occasionally because despite the plots being quite awful, I simply love, love, love the effects!

#86612 Who had the best fantasy weapon?

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 04:54 AM in Fantasy

The Dragon Buster (because anything designed for the sole purpose of killing freaking DRAGONS has got to be bad ass), pretty much anything a ninja touches   or anything from Batman's belt, and Shardblades (and Shardplate) from Brandon Sanderson's epic Stormlight Archive.

#86611 AOT or Death Note

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 04:38 AM in Anime

Death Note all the way. I just can't take Attack on Titan serious when the so-called titans or giants or whatever look like zombified Barbie and Ken dolls. Yeah. I get that those things would be seriously scary if they were real and attacking our cities. But they're not. So they're lame.  :P

A lot of people say Death Note dragged on a little too long and that it really just dropped off at a certain point and those people...are right. I won't mention who, but a certain main character dies only to be replaced by another character who is pretty much the same but whom I care less about because I just spent most of the series investing my feelings in his/her predecessor who should never have died in the first place if they were only going to be replaced by some shallow carbon copy. But I still really loved. It was dark, brooding, bloody, and aesthetically pleasing enough that I still managed to enjoy it even after its drop-off point. And I just love the shinigami. Gods of death with just enough of a human touch and individual motivations to keep them engaging as consistent characters.

#86610 I'm really bad at this.....

Posted by Boo on 03 February 2015 - 04:28 AM in Introductions

I really hate introducing myself. In person and online. So I'll make this quick. Check out my profile if you want to read my About Me and Interests section. I always assume people never read that when/if they visit your profile. I'm just looking for a cool place to hang out and discuss some of my favorite (nerdy) subjects. I despise the term fanboy almost as much as I despise actual fanboys. I love getting in to deep discussions concerning my favorite mediums such as comic books and anime and I really love getting in to those "who would win" topics but I refuse to stoop to petty arguing and can't stand people who take those sorts of things too seriously. We don't have to agree who would win between Goku and Superman in order to talk about it. I don't care. Just shut up, act like an adult, and admit I'm right and we'll get along just fine. I just want to engage in some nerdism.

I'm also super awkward and I tend to ramble more than necessary. Soooooo yeah. That's it. I told you I'm bad at this. Despite my awkwardness, I'm a pretty easy person to engage. So by all means. Talk to me.
