For tablet users it might be awesome/better. I do not own a tablet, however, and am not interested in owning one.

#26550 Need Help with Symbolic Links in Windows [7]

#26485 Need Help with Symbolic Links in Windows [7]
Posted by Chrissaysay on 21 October 2012 - 01:32 PM in Software
My Questions
1. Many guides I read emphasized that one should never ever create symbolic links within symbolic links because it can cause "looping"...but what is looping exactly? I can't find a definitive answer. Everyone is just like..."Looping is a very very bad thing that you don't want so avoid doing anything that can cause it." :\
2. Can looping occur with any kind of symbolic link--soft, hard, junctions...?
3. What constitutes a symbolic link within a symbolic link?* I can't find a straight answer about this either.
5. If I were to accidentally create a loop, is it correctable? How difficult would it be to fix/remove a loop?
6. What kind of symbolic link would be best for what I am trying to do with Dropbox and Skydrive? I am currently using junctions, but I think I am going to use soft links instead of junctions/hard links because soft links apparently don't take up storage space in Dropbox or Skydrive. Is there any drawback to using soft symbolic links instead of junctions [in this situation]? I don't think it matters, but I could be wrong.
7. If you can, please give examples of situations where using a particular type of symbolic link would work best / better / be preferable. Like, "use a soft link if you want to do this: _____" or even "don't use a hard link if you want to do this:_____" and please explain why.
*My Theories
This section is not necessary to read. It's just my pondering/rambling typed out--It helps me organize thoughts.
If you answer Question #3 please elaborate as much as I have in the following "spoilers".
Theory 1:
Example:
[Soft] Link B: "c:\users\chrissie\documents\writing portfolio\awesomeessay.doc" points to Target B: "c:\users\chrissie\documents\college\englishessay.doc"
So, basically, Link B would be located in a different directory than Link A, but the target of Link B would be located within the directory that is the target of Link A.
What if the target of were a a directory instead of a file?
Theory 2:
Example:
Junction A: "c:\users\chrissie\dropbox\documents\college" points to Target A: "c:\users\chrissie\documents\college"
Using the same file names from Example 1, except that this time Link B and Target B have switched locations so that Link B is now Inside of Target A:
Link B: "c:\users\chrissie\documents\college\awesomeessay.doc" points to Target B: "c:\users\chrissie\documents\writing portfolio\englishessay.doc"
So, basically, Target A, (which is "real") is the parent directory of Link B, (which is not real). Link B links to Target B, which is a real file/directory outside of Target A, but this will cause looping because the OS and applications will not interpret symbolic links correctly when there is a chain like this.
Theory 3:
Example:
I want Junction B to be a sub-directory named "sunsets" inside of the "orange beach" directory. Junction B will point to Target B: "c:\users\chrissie\pictures\sunsets\beach"
So, when creating Junction B from the command prompt:
This is okay: mknlink /j "c:\users\chrissie\pictures\vacation\orange beach\sunsets" "c:\users\chrissie\pictures\sunsets\beach"
This is not okay: mklink /j "c:\users\chrissie\pictures\kodak camera\orange beach\sunsets" "c:\users\chrissie\pictures\sunsets\beach"
Basically, I have to make sure that when I create the symbolicJunction B, I make itstarget the real Target A. because if I create the symbolicJunction B with the symbolicJunction A as its target, looping will occur.

We were testing our version of flash..So my professor went to YouTube and this was on the front page and he was like, "What in the world is this one here...?" We laughed and told him to click and find out, promising it was safe for school. He watched about half of it before saying "Goll-y that's enough of that."
Was very lol-worthy.
