I think there is a sort of spectrum. I would put myself into a sort of intermediate area because while I submerge myself in RPGing/ gaming and acquisition of knowledge, I'm not into stuff like 4chan, anime, films or Reddit.

Watching movies is nerdy now? ._.

Hipsters do it to look cool/intelligent/edgy.

some girls do it for attention, the worse ones realise there's an almust untapped attention source in nerd culture, so they parade around pretending to be nerdy in hopes they'll have guys pay attention to them/give tem gifts. the reason it's a big issue is because it happens a lot.

heck, my last ex was basically a fake geek/nerd girl.

I got lucky, my woman has the nerd thing covered but doesn't boast it.
I didn't even know about her nerd side when we got together.
I have always been fairly solidly on the nerdy side, whether it was hidden or not, and she is the one who introduced me to Doctor Who.
Win.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.
