The internet in one room is significantly worse in one room than it is in the other. Would a wifi extender fix this solution, or is there a better alternative?

You could use a wifi extender or get a cheap wireless router and run it in repeater/booster mode.

If your router has removable antennas, a high gain antenna might be an easier and simpler option
