How did we go from a truck full of VCRs to this?

It is hilariously dated that the big score in the first one was VHS technology.

I'm pretty sure I got that exact T.V./VCR combo for graduating grade eight.
Which was fifteen years ago, and now I feel dated too.

They were what I loved. Not DVD players.
VHS tapes never force me to watch commercials and they don't play when they stop working, instead of skipping.
On the subject of skipping, do any of you know how to skip (hop)? I never could.

VHS tapes didn't have fewer advertisements because they were VHS tapes, it is because they are from a different era of society.
We hammer the fuck out of everyone with a shit tonne more ads than 80's-90's people had to deal with.
Skipping is better than a cease in function, and VHS technology is quite a bit inferior to DVDs.
Which have been outpaced at this point as well.
What you said is like saying you miss rotary phones because they never made you download software updates or got sent through the wash.

To be honest the 80s and 90s were the point where modern consumerism began; we only believe we are submitted to more advertising now because there are more mediums for it with the widespread usage of smart-phones and computers. It's all a load of utter wank and advertising strategists ought to be strung up and shot.
Also I do miss VHS as well, there's something about a big bulky funny smelling tape that's just more pleasing than a DVD. Also I listen to vaporwave unironically so...that's probably also why.

If we have more avenues of advertisement being used on us then we are exactly being submitted to more advertising than when we were wee lads.
Imagine how people would have reacted in the late 80s-early 90s if they bought a tv and when they plugged it in they saw pre-programmed commercials and advertisements built right in to the unit. We just sort of shrug off ads today because they are literally everywhere. But back then something as common as formatted ads in the tv would have probably been a public outrage of sorts. It drives me nuts too that there are people out there who's entire job is to figure out sneaky new ways to put advertisements where the general public can't help but see them. Or to just be blatant and cheap about it. I read an article online the other day and half way through I realised that the article was only two paragraphs long and the rest of the four page scroll down was ads. There was this little text box in the middle with literally every other surface of the page just splattered with garbage about nothing.
I wonder if we are slowly becoming less observant to details as a species because we have to intentionally ignore shit all day?

I think we're becoming more sophisticated in what we discern as relevant and irrelevant information in our environment.
