Depends on the build. IMO, Intel has always been more "Business", I always use AMD for any gaming systems I build.

Intel invented the CPU. AMD is second. As far as performance goes, they are theoretically the same and the differences are not noticable.
AMD FX series is/was Great. The new Ryzen processors are great too.
I have about 6 computers in my life.
My tv is hooked up with an Acer mini PC with Intel i3.
My Main gaming/everything else PC is AMD fx830
My Work PC is AMD Ryzen 5
My Work laptop is Intel i5
My secondary work pc is AMD FX 6300
My third retired side work pc is AMD A6 3650
They are perform well or used to perform well and still do for their age.
Just make sure you get a CPU that exceeds your use. Match that to correct MOBO and RAM and you will be all set.
SSD for OS and HDD for everything else.

AMD processors are good for competition. Without AMD, Intel would be the leading PC CPU manufacturer and with no competition PCs could be much more expensive. AMD CPUs can rival Intel CPUs in many respects which leads to competition between thes companies.
Except for specialised PCs/applications, AMD CPUs are probably slightly cheaper than Intel while offering similar capabilities.
