I don't know why, but I didn't think to take pictures of the plain bar stock I started with. Here's a few shots as I went though.

It makes me laugh, my friend in Iowa has a blacksmith boyfriend who has all this kit and makes knives and stuff. Your shit looks so much more refined and cool than his and it's just like, guy, you obviously need to step up your game if you're gonna call yourself a blacksmith.
Good work, Danny.

A lot of people get the basic shape from the forge and just stop there. Things only really look good if you put in the extra effort to make sure everything is ground smooth and polished.
Thank you.

It's hard to tell from pictures, but I wasn't really happy with the coloring on it, so I re-polished it and tried again.

Not yet, but that's my goal.

I need to get a strop to get it as sharp as it's supposed to be, and should probably watch a video or two on how to shave with a straight razor.

I wouldn't mind having a straight razor, but I don't really grow enough facial hair to need to shave.
A pair of small scissors do fine,

Haha okay. I guess shaving with a razor like that isn't too easy. But it's kinda awesome.
I think i'd try it if i had your metal working skills. Also i guess i'm missing the facial hair.
I'm not sure how hard it would be. It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult, but I want to make sure there are no tricks before I peel my face off.

I really doubt it would be practical long term, but I think it's going to be a nifty skill to have.

Looking sharp dude (pun totally intended even if it isn't sharp yet).
Practicality is a nice thing to have when a new skill is acquired, but not a necessity.
Besides, when an apocalypse happens you will now know how to make blades for mane purposes.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Thank you.
It's plenty sharp enough to cut things up, just not quite shaving sharp yet. I think I need to lean out the final bevel a little. I've never really sharpened a razor before though so I'm not sure.
When the apocalypse happens I will either be the first to die, or the king of the new wasteland.

As you said, a strop will give you the edge you want for shaving.
There is definitely some skill to using one but I am sure you can figure it out given your general aptitude with most things handy.
I would definitely not be anywhere near the top of the death list if an apocalypse popped up.
If I am within walking range of my house I am essentially equipped and packed to walk in to the woods and survive for about two weeks just on what I am carrying in my GOOD bag. If I have a few hours I can easily expand that time frame to a few months.
I know better than to make a target of myself in that scenario and instead just sort of disappear in to the night until I need to come back out to scavenge.

So I made a half-assed strop from an old boot. Not quite as sharp as I'd like, it tugged a bit. I was able to shave my face with only a single little nick though.

There are plenty of places for me to escape to here, but I mean, what would be the fun of that?

I'm easily scared

Apparently blade geometry is super important to straight razors, so I redid it a bit to make it more appropriate. While I was at it, I decided if I'm going to go all the way I'm going to properly harden the steel. Unfortunately this means much less awesome blue and purple.
