How did people wake up on time for work or school before the alarm clock was invented?

It actually used to be someone's job. He would wake up at sunrise and go door-to-door knocking on doors/windows to wake people up.

 

That and roosters. Loud-ass roosters.

I like to think he just never slept.

 

I'm sure most people just had internal alarm clocks, or woke up with the sun.

Or drank a fuck truck of water before they went to bed to ensure they'd wake up early.

In honesty, one thing people did was to make candles in tin trays and press nails into them. As the wax melted the nails fell into the pan and made a loud noise, thus waking the person at a timed interval.

How would you know how far to put the nail in? Is that really how most people tried to wake themselves up?

They calculated how long the wick would take to burn and put the nails in place accordingly.
