I found this. It's neat. A robotic band consisting of "a 78-fingered guitarist, a drummer with 22 arms, and a keyboardist who triggers notes with lazers."

They "modulate the spark output" to achieve different pitches, then arrange them in whatever rhythm and tempo that they need to make a tune.
Probably altering the voltage and maybe the distance between rods is the trick.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.
