http://www.livescien...-blue-eyes.html

I found this article on Livescience and it caught my eye (pun totally intended),
seeing as how I (again, pun) have very blue eyes.
Pretty cool stuff.

And just for fun, there is a poll.
If you pick other please specify what sort of other you have.
Sometimes people have a hard time classifying thier own eye colour.

That just means you aren't a mutant.

hazel. sorry, but hazel eyes > all.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

People with blue eyes, and subsequently green eyes, actually have better night vision than all others.

Not sure i buy what the article is saying about all blue eyed people having a single common ancestor.

Particularly because of the comment "Out of 800 persons we have only found one person which didn't fit — but his eye color was blue with a single brown spot,"
So this person had eyes that were blue enough to make it into your study, but when this person became evidence that your hypothesis was wrong you try to say they dont actually belong in the group being tested? Sounds very iffy to me. This research needs to be redone a time or two before this guy says he made a breakthrough in genetic history. And while 799 people may sound like a lot there are more than a billion blue eyed individuals in the world. And of the 799 people they all are from the same area of the world(i am aware denmark is a fair bit north from jordan and turkey which are very close together, still in the same area of the world.) It would not be farfetched to find that many people with a single common ancestor from a stretch as far back as 10k years.

I am not saying he is wrong, but he may be jumping the gun a bit here.

also my eyes change colors and included in the potential colors they change to are both green and blue and occasionally(though very rarely) a light shade of brown. More often than not my eyes are green.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

i have green eyes, the rarest and bestest of all eye colors.

who the hell else picked green?

kenny: you'd be amazed how many scientific studies do something similar with anomalous data.

When I was a kid my eyes were so dark you couldn't distinguish the pupils.

Now they're just really dark brown.

I love light eyes.

I love seeing how many variations of color peoples eyes can get, and how the colors can change daily.

My mom lovingly tells me that I'm so full of shit my eyes are brown.

The article is pretty interesting, but I have to agree with koala. Based on this poll, their sample size was .0000008% of the people with blue eyes, and they were able to find an anomaly.

Brown. I had an ex at one time with some creepy eye colors. They'd change dramatically in different light.
Between green blue and grey. It was fun watching her go bug eyed with grey.

Though this study sampled a small portion of the planet, it still stands to argue that the gene originated with one person.
It had to start somewhere.

Also, they did sample countries with majority blue eyes, and majority brown eyes, and fairly mixed.

And on the note of shared ancestors, according to another gene study every human being alive today shares a slice of genetic information with a single female ancestor from sixty thousand years or so ago, and a different slice of genetic code with a male ancestor who existed one hundred and something thousand yeas ago (I believe my dates are correct, but this is from memory so they may be a bit off).
These two individuals genetics were spread population wide and became the standard, so it is possible that a single individual with blue eyes could have done the same.
Plus, in a world of brown eyes people the one person with blue eyes would have probably been a very hot topic and been revered as unique and attractive for it.
Which would have allowed them to produce a shit tonne of children.
Hence the widespread genetic variant.

I believe it's very possible, but I still think they need a much larger sample size.

Agreed, but until then we can only speculate given the information we have.
Which at the end of the day is what science is all about.

Pretty much.
With such an infinite pool of information to gather and understand in the entire universe it is a miracle anyone can slow down and pick one thing to focus on.
I wish I could absorb all that there is to be known just so I can have a few definitive answers to things.
Or maybe I would just want to be able to time travel back and see what happened for myself.
Maybe find that monkey person with the blue eyes and figure out where it actually started.

I think if I had definitive answers for things I'd get bored pretty quickly. I have to admit though, some things in history I'd love to be able to watch go down.

If blue eyed people are mutants, I'm a super mutant. My eyes are for the most part blue, but one of them (I forget which) is about 1/3 hazel.
