Can't believe there isn't a thread about this yet.
I've watched the show, and read the books (except Dance with Dragons, please warn about spoilers..) and they are absolutely amazing. I want George R.R Martin to be my BFF.
Favorite parts? Fav characters, scenes. Adaptation of the show?
Who else wants to marry Daenery's and have her babies....dragons....ahem

Got about halfway through the first book before I quit. The story didn't grab me at all, characters are weak and generic, and hopping characters every chapter got old real fast.

I recommend that you keep going. I think that i got through the first book because I had watched the show and wanted to read the second book to see what was going to happen next. The story as a whole is really epic.

Heh, you shouldn't have to force yourself to the end of a book!

I'm surprised you enjoyed it too, what with the themes of patriarchy and weakness of women running through the entire series. Khal Drogo for instance, is blatantly Martin's pride and joy. With that all being said, I do love the TV series and I'm sure the books are quite good.

I actually gave it a lot more than I do with most books. If I'm not grabbed within the first three chapters, I normally drop it as a bust. Martin's writing style irks me far too much though.

I think that George Martin writes his female characters very well. Yes there are "weak" women and the men like to treat their wives like shit (not to mention the plethora of rape...), but some of the most important characters in the series are women.
To each their own I guess. There are some books/movies that people love that I despise.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting they're bad, I haven't read them so I can't comment. If they're anything like the HBO series I'm sure they're great. =)

They are starting to change stuff in the show that happened in the books. In the third book some cray cray shit goes down that I feel they might change to make audiences happy....

I think part of the reason they're changing stuff in the show is so you don't know exactly what's going to happen. Keeps the suspense up a bit.

They are doing that with Walking Dead too. I totally get that but I hope they don't chicken out with the event that happens in the third book...if you know what I mean....

On one hand i understand that they sometimes change things so you don't necessarily know whats going to happen. On the other directors have a bad habit of changing very important things that change the story into a completely different telling, ruining it for the main target audience(the many fans of the book series).

What i really hate is when they change parts of a series due to budget. Why bother shelling out the cash if your not going to do it right damnit!

Well I've been pretty happy with how it's all been turning out so far. Walking Dead, too. My favourite TV series.
