Looking for a new laptop.

Specifically, a gaming laptop.

Right now I have my eye on this pretty little MSI.

Dedicated video, Radeon HD8970M is about the best Radeon card right now, and is right near the top of the list of the best mobile dedicated graphics chips.

I'm pretty sure that's either the second or third best Mobile A10 series, but the higher ones produce too much heat for a 15.6' chassis.

I looked at the A8's as well, but I wasn't able to find much with a top GPU.

No your suspicions are correct. 

However I would be under clocking during non load times (when not gaming, for example) to lessen heat and power usage.

I think this weekend I'm going over to my local Tiger Direct to see what they have in store. 

I think those aluminum USB fan powered platforms that go under the laptop are good for helping keep cool.  Not many options for cooling a laptop though.  Maybe you could find a walk-in restaurant refrigerator to game in.

Well my house is air conditioned, but I use my desktop there. I suppose I could just make friends with other gamers who have AC.

I had one of those cooling fans in the past, the problem is they aren't really that easy to transport. What I used to do with my previous Asus was stand it up on erasers so there was space under it for air flow, knocked the temp down by a few degrees. 

Well, we're also rounding the bend and heading towards Autumn and cooler months ahead.  This could be a heat source during the shorter days and longer nights ahead.  Also, if you're stuck in the wilderness, you could turn it on and place it between your clothing and your chest for warmth.  

I've used the USB powered cooling fan platforms in the past, and agree - they can be pretty awkward if you're actually pretty mobile.  I ended up using a laptop cooling tray (non powered, no fan, cheap and simple laptop tray that had grooves to provide room for air circulation) beneath the cooling pad.  Not a true resolution, but it did prevent me from grabbing the laptop and have a cooling pad dangle by the USB port.

the sole reason I'm buying the laptop is fior when I'm hanging out with friends or family.

Something no one is mentioning about these laptops is that until the A10 gets fully taxed, the dedicated card won't kick in, so it really keeps down on heat and power usage when you're not doing lots of gaming. 

Not that anyone probably cares but fun fact, Diamond the EULCS jungler on Gambit uses an msi laptop xD
