I am writing a SCI FI movie, and I need a fellow nerds insight. I need a list of names for alien species. If you can provide me with as many as possible, it would be greatly appreciated!

Very interesting. How do you intend to make this film? Live action? Animation?

In any case read up about Bad Taste, it's a sci-fi film directed by Mr Peter Jackson (Who directed LOTR and The Hobbit) and happens to be his first full length film. It's about Aliens who invade New Zealand hahahaha. Awesome shit nonetheless.

Have you got an idea for a story? What's your main inspiration? Battlestar Gallactica? Dr Who? Independence Day? Stargate? Star Trek?

Brainstorm some ideas and post in in this thread and I'll tell you what I think ;)

I'm straight up but I won't be an asshole about anything. :D

Its a live action movie. Im a nerd, so i want to create a movie better than star wars, and star trek. Again, I cant give much away... But ill tell that the story is set in late 2100's, and includes multiple races, and planets (duh). The story explains how aliens communicated with us, then how we began to co-exist. I cant say much more than that XD

Those are some pretty high hopes.

If you want to give your alien races more than adequate names, I would first consider what their language sounds like as a whole.

If you are being lazy and just having them all speak english, then take a look at their culture and derive appropriate names from that angle.

Intellectual/philosophical races tend to have smoother transitions between words and more syllables per word, warrior/barbarian races tend to use short/choppy words in their communications. Insect-like races communicate with clicks and growl type noises. Things with tentacles tend to screech and pop.

those are just commonalities though, something new is always better when it comes to aliens.

Really though, if you are a writer who plans on making a movie better than bloody Star Wars and/or freaking Star Trek anything, and you think that is within the realm of possibility, I see no rational reason why you would need to seek help from anyone outside of your own braincage for something like this.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Bad Taste was awesome. Also Galaxina, Spaceballs, Indie filmmaker's commentary tracks on DVD can also be inspirational  - Kevin Smith, Richard Linklater, etc. Or scifi - James Cameron, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, etc.
