Well...technically photoshop locks up, not the i7.
I'm trying to photomerge 80 1920x1080 png's, The processor usage never goes to 100%, and the ram usage doesn't get higher than 3-4gb out of 16. This is on 64bit CS5.1

Suggestions?

Use set affinity to assign it 3 dedicated cores rather than 4. If you are crossfire'd/SLI'd disable your second card before doing it.

Would the dedicated cores be 0,1,2,3 or 0, 2, 4, 6?

Tried both configurations with the second card disabled, still locking up.
The rest of the computer works fine though.

I cut down the images by 15, seems to be working now, though ever so slowly. It's utilizing the ram I've made available now, and has started on the scratch disk.

Also, I don't suppose there's away to take advantage of some massive GPU power on photoshop for this sort of thing, is there?

I don't think you can manually allocate things to your GPU(s). If it locks up after turning off one of the cores and disabling your second card then I'd have to assume its a problem with Photoshop itself.

16 1080 images is quite a bit of memory for it to try to allocate and handle... you'd think it would throttle itself into a queue for this situation...
Try merging them in smaller increments. Let me know if they end up all merging successfully.

I just started working with photomerge, normally what I do is touchups and such.

This is starting to be a major pain in the ass. All I wanted were amazingly high resolution video game panoramas damn it. >.>

i can imagine, man. >_>

but christ man, 80 images to start? seems a bit overkill, especially if you're trying features your'e not familiar with (what i take when you say "just started working with photomerge").

i guess someone has to be prepared for the eventual 80 screen shop setup, huh? <____<

hrm...doing it in batches gives me some really funky images...
I may have to see what other photo stitching software is out there.

I'm giving it a try now. It allows me to set the FOV, which may help as well.
