Source Code director Duncan Jones is to make a film based on the World of Warcraft video games by Blizzard Entertainment.

With more than 10 million subscribers globally, World of Warcraft is the world's biggest MMORPG, or massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

The film's total budget is believed to be in excess of $100 million (£63 million).

The director's first film, Moon, cost $5 million (£3.1m) in 2009.

He followed it with Source Code, in 2011, starring Jake Gyllenhaal which had an estimated budget of $32 million (£20m).

The British/American science fiction techno/thriller then went on to gross more than $147 million (£92m) worldwide.

A statement on the Warcraft Facebook page said: "We are pleased to announce that Duncan Jones, director of critically-acclaimed films Source Code and Moon, has signed to direct the upcoming live-action film based on the Warcraft universe."

The director, who was born in Bromley, south London, also confirmed his involvement on Twitter.

Yesh, I have been waiting so long for this.
I really love the WarCraft universe.
I'm really afraid they'll mess up though, creating something like The Last Airbender :(

I hope it's awesome. Not sure how I feel about it being live action though. I imagine a guy in a tauren suit will look funky.

They would probably just tone down the bulk and get someone like these guys to be in the rig.

I am curious as to what the story will actually be. It seems to me that it would be next-to-impossible to write a good story encompassing both Alliance and Horde characters. A good story would probably have to side with the Horde (I played Alliance, but let's face it; the horde were the good guys. Or at least less-evil.) but general audiences probably couldn't wrap their heads around that.

I'm also not quite sure which direction they'll take with the tone. Personally, I am not a fan of WoW lore. No, hold on... I like the lore, but I hate the overarching story. It seems like a bunch of boring people who slowly turn evil because they are full of boring angst. Ideally they wouldn't make a movie out of any of them. If they go the angst-and-slowly-turning-evil route... I don't know if I could enjoy such a movie.

Regardless, I will by very curious about this. I'll probably watch it even if I don't think it will be good.
I don't think he needs to be immortal. I think all he needs to do is to write the right story. Because some stories do live forever.

Horde/evil sides in general usually seem misunderstood to me. They're the dregs of the dregs. The goblins, the dark-skins, the orcs, the trolls, the demons, the practitioners of "dark" magic. Whereas the alliance/"good" sides tend to be the paladins, the righteous human warriors, the high elves, etc.

I play good heroes usually, solely because they're prettier >.>

That was pretty much my reasoning behind playing Alliance as well.
Plus, I tend to play rogues, and I didn't like the idea of playing a rogue in a big huge tank race.
Or undead. I just didn't like the design of the undead in WoW. Not as player characters, at least.

(Goblin rogue would have been fun, though.)

Why would they make a movie off a VIDEO game?

Can you imagine how bad a Mario movie would be?

Although, I'll admit, a Zelda movie would have some potential. Besides Zelda, Metroid, and a few others, I can't really see many games doing well in the movie transition >.<

There is a Super Mario Brothers movie.
It is renown for being terrible.

Also:

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Final Fantasy: Advent Children
All Resident Evil movies
DOOM
Double Dragon
Street Fghter
Mortal Kombat(s)
Tomb Raider
Silent Hill
Hitman
Max Payne
Tekken

Those are just off the top of my head.
Some f them are terrible, but some are actually half decent movies.

My first thought: Oh god, but Hollywood ruins everything I love.

My second thought: This will probably make WoW cosplay easier in the long run.

I guess you have to take the good with the bad =/ Also, at least it has a decent director attached to it. Could be worse. Could be Uwe Boll.

They sure did, it was ok.
Cheesy as hell, but what can you expect from a movie that you have never heard of.

As a person who has never played WOW, I can say that it's quality does not affect my life in any way other than having to hear about how terrible it is from every corner of the internet, if it turns out that way.
