Well, I'm trying my luck again, and hoping there isn't a flame war.

Star Trek or Star Wars? Please explain why.

Star Wars because it revolutionized the film industry.
Star Trek because it boldy went where no other show had gone before.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Firefly.

*Runs away giggling*

No. Star Wars seems more action oriented, while Trek is more story driven. I didn’t watch Trek as a child and the only happy memories I have are from then, so Wars wins by default. Yaaay, logic based decisions!

It's kinda like comparing candy and soda - they're both full of amazing sugar but still serve very different purposes!

Star Wars is the epic tale, set in a mystical world in an ancient time, containing one of the best stories of good and evil, and some of the best characters ever made! While Star Trek is a story about us! Our planet, humankind in the future - exploring the same universe that we today wonder about looking up at the stars. While, of course, also bringing to life some of the most amazing characters of all time.

The two explore very different existential questions, in very different ways. So eager as I am of arguing about it, I kind of don't think they should be compared in general - in that case I would much rather argue about who is the best leader between Kirk and Picard...

... or why not Picard and Mace Windu?

Trek, because it revolutionized the sci-fi genre. Without trek, I doubt sci-fi would be as popular as it is today. Trek also has a lot more lore that I can immerse myself in. There were 726 (exactally, including the pilot) episodes, spanning 6 series, 14 feature films, 540 books and hundreds (thousands?) of comics, not to mention the memorabilia. Star wars is great, but it really cant compare to trek.

note: out of the 726 episodes, I have seen all of them but the animated series.
I'm fearful, I'm fearful, I'm fearful of flying, and flying is fearful of me.

fun fact, one of the most common questions lucas got from companies he tried to sell on star wars was "does it have to be in space?"

Star Wars has quite a bit of lore too actually.

So you could actually sit through Deep Space Nine?
Bravo for having a stronger stomach than I.

Those people are not officially on my shit list.
If Star Wars had no space stuff in it we would have ended up with some weird Flash Gordon looking pile of terrible.

Star Wars has quite a bit of lore too actually.

Star wars does have a massive amount of lore.
Star Trek came first, so it had more time to set up their histories, but Star Wars caught up with it eventually.

I would say they both were revolutionary in their own right, which makes them both fairly equal as far as bragging rights go.

It all falls down to whether you prefer space psychics having laser sword battles and strangely attractive blue aliens, or space naval officers traversing the void shooting phasers and photon torpedoes at stuff and strangely attractive green aliens.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Yes I did, and I fixed it.
Though technically Star Trek had to have caught up with itself to be where it is/was.

lol! I agree that its my least favorite (fun fact: I actually don't count the animated series)
I actually have a friend who likes 9 the best. You have no idea how much we have argued on that topic (that's okay, I enjoy trek based arguments)

Star Wars has quite a bit of lore too actually.

Agreed. Note that I in no way dislike star wars. Return of the Jedi is my favorite movie of all time.
That being said, Wars will never measure up to Trek on that front. In fact, the only other fantasy world that I can think of that has more would be the Tolkien books (including the histories of middle earth, which was partially written by Christopher Tolkien)

For the record, chewy of spok?

I like deep space 9 too. Just nowhere near as much as **every other series of trek, except maybe enterprise.** (again, I don't count the animated series)

In your opinion Sir, I love the extended SW universe. (many great books there) Also as much as I love Chewy, gotta go Spock.

Who thinks Spock is too arrogant to let a wookie win at space chess?

*letting* him win would be illogical.
