We need a way to hook in guests so they create an account. Maybe just reading the forums is enough, but I joined because I wanted a forum for nerds, clicked this site for the first time and joined. Not everyone is like that however. Some of you are with us today because you found this forum interesting. Let's attract more guests!

I've always figured the content we create in threads would hook in any guests.

There's really no way to get anyone who sees the forum and doesn't like it or isn't interested by it. Simply, if you don't like something you're not going to do it. if they do like it they'll join.

This. The best way to get guests to join a forum is good, high quality content.

We do pretty alright for high quality content.
I have noticed a little jump in new members recently.
Not bad.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

It seems guests have nearly all the capabilities members of this forum have except for communicating with members and posting messages. Is there an option to disable some of those things, like, viewing members profiles? I don't know what the options are for various forum software, except a few.

Ugh . . .

We can indeed turn that off - but I'm hesitant to. If it's a privacy concern, I can make a setting to hide your profile from guests if you choose.

You have mod or admin capabilities? I thought there was only one admin.

I do a little bit of development for the site so I have admin/mod powers and there's another user with mod powers. It's not a big deal and I believe we both count ourselves as members first so we don't tout a title or anything.

If for enabling those restrictions for guests, wouldn't be a bad idea.

I feel the best way to get guests to register is to let them read the threads so that they want to interact. Also, I'll have to check, but unless something got changed in the update, they can't see profiles.

I don't know how much it affects a forum if it is private, somewhat private or mostly open, or completely open. Some have certain areas of a forum that are private.

And I logged out to see if I could view my profile as a guest, and I could.

Ugh . . .

I might change it so that guests can't see profiles, but there's really no sensitive information in them.

Otherwise, I don't plan on limiting their viewing access.

I am fine with either way. I was just going to PM the question to you, but, a prompt said you are not accepting messages.
