Welcome to another issue of my laptop!

I've been having a lot of fps drops lately, just randomly out of the blue.
Weird thing is, however, that there are no heavy and intensive conditions for the GPU, so I don't really get why it's dropping.
I get them about every 10 to 15 minutes, which is simply a pain in shooters, as it's almost always a death.

Not only the FPS drops though, my sound will become distorted too, both from the game and from Skype.

I have an i7-2630QM and an HD6850M, which should be able to handle the games I play, and most of the time they do.

Does anybody know a possible solution to this problem? D:

Have you checked your temps when the spike happens?

What is a good program for that?

HWMonitor is the go to for most. (the free version doesn't support logging, so you'll have to alt tab as it happens)

You could also run a benchmark, such as Furmark, to get an overall snapshot of your GPU temps.

I'll download it and try to see the temps during a drop.
What are normal temps for an i7 laptop?

I can't speak entirely from experience here (I haven't owned a laptop in ages), however, it should be ~40c. Your GPU should be about the same, and I'd hope it wouldn't go above 80c under heavy load.

If your temps are hitting above that with no load, blow the dust out of any intakes/exhausts. (air compressor or canned air, doesn't matter)

Okay, being serious here. Get a Mac.

Okay, actually serious here, I promise. I don't want to start a Mac vs. PC debate here, as this is an actual issue.
I'm honestly not a go to person for this, but if the sound is getting distorted too, then there's definitely a hardware difficulty.
Sorry if I'm being Captain Obvious, haven't used a PC in years.

If the game is on Steam, check the cache just in case. If it's not, if you can, re-download (in case it's the game).
I really don't know much, take rex's word over mine.

I'm going to say overheating as well, though with that setup I'd expect to see in the 60*c range.

Is that number from personal experience? I only ask so I could have a good point of reference. :x I guess the temp depends on the surface its on as well.

Probably depends on the surface as well. Also, this is obvious, but if you're spending 30 something hours on a computer at a time like I used to, you're going to have some problems. I fried my iMac's logic board (Macintosh equivalent of a motherboard), but I got free repairs *coughMEcough*

Not really, I didn't repair it. I could've, but taking apart a Mac kinda voids warranties...and I did get a free repair because I'm such an Apple user. Not just me, my entire family too. We're all Apple lovers.
Wow. I get REALLY off topic. >.< Sorry!

That's about what I normally see intel processors run under load with basic cooling, and generally what I see for laptops as well.

Man, I thought intels ran cooler.

I think HWMonitor is still choking on the Vishera chips, its reading 8*C (which is 46F, and I know my room isn't below 60* atm)

Stock i3 and i5 chips run very cool, but their laptop parts get warm. The first Macbooks with sandy i7's got to 100*c thanks to some poor cooling choices.

For desktops parts its around there, the laptop ones are a bit more durable.

I guess they must've kind of fixed the 100+ temps, but then still, what temps should my laptop actually be at?

it's been so long since i ran with a laptop. they do inherently run warmer. i'd venture to say it's all those parts in a confined space. they are made to run warmer, but too hot is still a problem. i wouldn't be too worried if it was at the 60-70c, 80 means it's starting to get a bit warm, and anything above 90 should mean it needs a break. make sure to clean your intake and exhaust ports out regularly, dust is a killer.

and invest in a cooling pad. i'm always amazed at how few people get them if they're using their laptops for an extended duration.

I think someone mentioned this before, but check and see if the fan's working.
Also, I would think that laptops would be more durable when it came to temperature. They are portable, after all, and would probably tend to be used longer at a time.

For some reason, the FPS drops barely occur anymore, but I'm certain they'll be back...
