Is there something that you can't stand not having when you're reading/watching a fantasy novel or movie?

Like, I always want a strong female lead. I think because I myself am a rather incompetent girl, I like to see other girls go on the adventures that I can't do. Plus, a girl kicking butt is always sexy, no matter the gender of the person reading. I can't stand The Princess Bride for the sole reason that I found Buttercup useless, I just end up yelling at the movie/book if the female lead can't get her act together.

I also really like to have a decent magic system. I find Brent Weeks' novels always have an interesting system of magic, especially in The Black Prism.

Happy cliche endings, the absolute worst for me. If the heroes face insurmountable odds, they should die. Simple as.

Death. It has to be a possibility, even for the main characters or i have trouble really getting into the story. It just removes the realism for me.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Yes, all kinds of yes.

For me to enjoy anything fantasy related the formula is simple.
Good characters plus better plot divided by detailed and graphic environments.
With these three ingredients my imagination can work of an imfinite amount of interest in a story.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.
