Sup. My hard drive is dying worse than before. As you may have probably not known, I have a bafflingly expensive computer that pretty much malfunctioned from day 2. Anyway, I can't even play RIFT on minimum graphics apparently, and I'm getting the BSOD more frequently than before. Now bits of the drive are ending up corrupted afterwards, which is directly conflicting with my desire to grind experience and waste my life. I had to re-download the whole 10GB game at like 800 kb/s this morning because of it, the whole thing just wound up corrupt somehow.

Now, the hard drive check actually found corrupt data this time, cuz it did a bunch of automatic repairs on them, but it never explicitly told me the drive was malfunctioning. You figure that'd still be covered by the warranty? Also, cuz the last thing I wanna do is wait weeks to use my computer, is there any way to check the physical health of the drive myself before I ship it off? Like... could something be loose or some wacky crap? I don't really know computer hardware, so it might just be a stupid question, but I figure it's worth a shot.

You'd have to check the paperwork for the hard drive to know if it was still under warranty. Hopefully you also still have receipts of the purchase.

If you still have an older machine, you could try switching the drives around to see if it's a hardware or software problem.

if you haven't already, it may be in your best interest to back up vital data that you cannot restore/redownload.

are you getting BSOD during boot up or heavy load sequences?

and as a precautionary, are you noticing extraneous noises from your computer?

it's funny you're having so much trouble with your pc. is it a name brand or did someone make it themselves?

1. It's under warranty

2. It's brand new

3. I intend to back up a lot on DVD

4. Yes indeed I am. The hard drive clicks loudly before it locks up.

5. It's an iBuyPower custom.

1 good, i advise starting up a claim to replace it immediately

2 it was more meant if you had another computer around to switch parts with.

3 i honestly suggest you get started soon on that because of number 4

4 that's not good. this could just be noisy bearings, but it could also be early signs of mechanical failure.

5 i've never dealt with that company before, so i cannot say much.

Okay, well, I suppose I'll start backing everything up tomorrow and ship the part out for a few weeks of computerlessness T-T

Any idea if a solid state drive would be less likely to break down mechanically? Because this isn't the first HDD I've had go out this way.

sorry >.o but better safe than sorry. if you have a small flash drive, look into DSL (damn small linux). should be able to allow you to at least use internet while the hard drive is away.

I don't think they would actually break 'mechanically' since there's nothing moving for that to break. that said, they can fail, and it will be catastropic. failure rates look lower, but that can be attributed to the lack of them in circulation. if you're having such trouble with your hard drives, it may be worth investing in a small one as a boot drive. or hell, even another internal for backup.

This is one of the reasons I need a real job instead of a crappy freelance thing.

 Well thanks for the advice
