Iwata has long opposed Nintendo IP-centric games on smart devices, citing numerous reasons such as releasing key franchises like Mario, Zelda or Pokemon on smartphones may have a negative impact on 3DS sales. He said in the briefing today that he is aware of the speculation that dedicated video game hardware may be consumed by smart devices.

"... with the spread of smart devices, we have increasingly heard a variety of opinions on the future of the dedicated video game system business, and in particular relatively pessimistic ones," Iwata said today. "We lost the balance of revenue and expenses as the era of the super strong yen occurred during the transition periods from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS and from Wii to Wii U, and we were not able to make these platform transitions as smoothly as we had expected."

"However, there is an obvious difference between Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems and other dedicated devices, which are said to have been displaced by smart devices: Nintendo is the biggest game software provider for its dedicated video game hardware," he added. "Even though 'who is providing applicable content' must be a very important factor, the pessimistic view on dedicated game systems neglects to acknowledge this difference."

Basically, they've realised that they can't coast on the 3DS' success alone, having to support its retarded older brother, the Wii U. So they're going to renege on their principles in an attempt to get money out of the people Iwata thought would kill console sales. Silly Iwata.

Then what the fuck was the gameboy?

OT: Smart move by nintendo. Honestly, I think the company is smarter than people give them credit for, they have foresight better than "Rerelease Zelda and Mario." They know how sales work, they know what people want to buy but they're also in the business of innovating games. So for every assumed risk they take [WiiU, innovative but underloved games, etc etc] they have some kinda solid sequel to release [new Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Mario, Zelda etc etc] to make up [at least somewhat] in profits.

I think the shift to mobile games isn't out of desperation, but is more of a tonal thing. Mobile games are quicker to make, and cheaper to make, so when Nintendo tries to innovate or create a genre, it's a much smaller risk than if they were to spend 50mil on a brand name 3DS title, and a much smaller risk than a 100mil WiiU title.

Basically, Nintendo wants to keep up the Nintendo shenanigans, but probably can't afford to keep doing these hit or miss 3DS titles.

Mobile, as in mobile phone.

They're not really innovating, either. They've already got some games in Japan which are crossovers with smartphone games (Puzzles & Dragons Super Mario Bros. for example)

I can't see them doing much more than Candy Crush Saga meets Zelda or something.

I'd buy a WiiU exclusively for MK 8.

I'm kinda excited for this. I'd love to see some well developed games for my phone, instead of using emulators on it all the time. WTB Pokemon on Android.

Yay for Playstation games on the go. I think there's a PS2 emulator too, but I haven't tried it.

That was pretty much the first thing I did when I got my first smart phone haha.

It'll be an interesting move... I'd still like my inter-changable face plates though (pls Nintendo America)
