So for anyone who missed this train wreck's appearance last week, here's a Gizmodo post describing the worst attempt at getting girls interested in computer engineering ever: http://gizmodo.com/b...-1660326671/all

Basically, a book meant to encourage girls into different career paths really dropped the ball and made Barbie look like an awful computer engineer. The book entails Barbie designing a game, and having to get her two guy friends to help her make it a real game by coding it for her. Then she goes and fucks up both her computer and her sister's and then must get her two guy friends to fix them. She's completely inept at anything and then takes the credit for everything the guys do at the end of the book, not really the image you want to set for young girls when there's so few of us in the field already.

But the amazing thing that came out of this was this website that lets you fix each page of the book. There were some serious corrections floating around, but below are a few of my favourites (put in spoilers because image heavy)

Yeah, I've seen this floating around. It's funny, and a little sad at the same time. Hacker Barbie should come with a Guy Fawkes mask and a mini vhs copy of Scanners.

My biggest complaint with the barbie book is that it was too realistic. /s

Pretty hilarious that Gizmodo was saying that anything remotely "feminist" was anything but raw, pure female empowerment.

Nice book. Barbie is a legend.

On the topic of women in IT, there are more every year.

I've had more female IT lecturers than male, at uni. They all have their phD.

Shit! Women in IT! Fucking hoo ra!

Woo!

Wish I could see the same, I'm the only female in my comp. engineering class. I see there's a good few of them in the compsci faculty though, if only I weren't so shy so I could have some female tech friends!

When I was in college there were a decent amount of women in my computer science and programming classes, though they were certainly outnumbered. In my digital design classes the guys were often outnumbered by girls, and even though it was design stuff, they were no slouches on other subject either. I think the people and knowledge is there, it's just a slow process moving into the more core STEM type classes.

Hopefully soon you'll see more diversity in your classes, and don't be afraid to say hi to the other people you come across. Remember, if they're not in your classes it will be easy to avoid them if things go horribly wrong!

Once you make first contact, providing it goes well, you'll make some friends or study-buddies at the least. Getting to know their names always helps.

I'm lucky in that my friend and I are doing the same degree together, but I didn't know anyone else besides him at start of it. I found it helps to study together, not only is that great for your study but also allows you to get to know people better. You're all working on the same things so there's your common interest.

Yeah, I've made awesome friends within my class that way. I need to apply it to outside the classroom haha.

Actually I read this earlier and it made me wonder if I could do some sort of mixer or something for girls in comp. eng/ compsci, I'm sure I'm not the only girl who wishes she had more female friends to talk code with.

Less women go into the STEM professions for a lot of reasons.  This Barbie may not help, but encouraging both genders to take programming classes in high school (something not all that common in public schools in America) would certainly help.  America is really behind a lot of other first world countries in that regard.

I wanted to be an engineer until I took college-level calculus.  I was amazing for the first semester (97% on the first semester final,) but everything after it was tough as nails to me.  I glomped onto business after I realized, hey, I just get marketing.

I need help with a snappy come back  to one of my friends chauvinistic husbands reply to a facebook post. I posted a thing that said

I am Female  Fe=Iron Male=Man Therefore I am Iron Man. It was a funny joke. This is his reply.

Alright Brooke I hope you are ready for the throw down rebuttal.

When I think of ironman I think....pussy!!! He is basically a glorified inspector gadget in a cool looking suit. When I think MAN I think.....wait for it.... SUPERMAN. What makes superm
an so super? I am glad you asked. He's just badass. Lasers coming out of his eyes, time travel, flying, super strength....I could go on but I'm tired. What's another name for superman? That's right, the MAN OF STEEL. How do you make steel? That's right, you melt IRON.

To make steel, iron ore is first mined from the ground. It is then smelted in blast furnaces where the impurities are removed and carbon is added. In fact, a very simple definition of steel is "iron alloyed with carbon, usually less than 1%."

So with that being said, The MAN OF STEEL is ironman without all the impurities which make him pure. Pure man. (Drops the mic)

I usually get the best of him but I don't even know what to say to this. I was thinking something along the lines like he admits iron is what makes steel so without iron (fe) his male wouldn't exist. That just isn't that snappy though. Hate to see this nimrod win. Please help.

That's one of the weirder first posts I've encountered.

Spend enough time inside a college campus' political theatrics, and almost everything doesn't surprise you anymore.

It's a nice trial by fire.

The whole 'you need iron to make steel' works rather well as women can make men but men cannot make women.

From what I know, it takes both a female and a male to reproduce humans. So either without the other is pretty useless.

I would rather kill myself than live in a world without females.

You've obviously got yourself an immature, pretentious, keyboard warrior (but aren't they all). I pretty much just block anyone on Facebook that I don't like, and unfollow people I don't care about.

Makes for a pretty boring but non-dramatic Facebook experience. There are better things to do with your day than read shit about shit people.

I recommend ignoring him, because rebutting would just cause more shit, then block him if you want. You'll feel so much better afterwards.
