So I'm considering building my own desktop sometime soon (not right now, don't really have the money, but soon!) The thing is I know that certain parts won't work together. The only problem is I don't know what to look for in compatibility.

So what sort of guidelines should I follow in making sure to pick parts that will work together?

What kind of budget are you looking at, and what are you hoping to do with it?

I am less interested in an actually build right now and more interested in learning, Should I throw a few pieces out there and then you can tell me why they specifically won't function together?

That'll work.

Basically, you're going to be looking at the motherboard and cpu matchup, and then finding a power supply that will fit the demands of everything.

Just as a start at least. After that, you're going to want to know price/performance, bottlenecks, and cooling.

Alright here are some that seem good for a good price:

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820231445

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130932

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811147053

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817171080

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822148840

I'll likely have 2/3 internal harddrives as I will need to be able to test various programs I make on each OS. Not sure if I will get the 3rd yet, will depends on if I know I can hackintosh it.

looks like this set up would be about 1,200.00 with getting 2 sets of 2x RAM and 2 Hard Drives. Of course I'll probably end up getting a second monitor but pretty sure all monitors will work with all systems so that isn't important for this theoratical experiment.

Unless you just want blue, the 4 pack of memory will be cheaper overall instead of buying two pairs. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820231429

Otherwise, looks like everything should fit.

Wait really? so all the parts just happen to work together? What did you check to make sure?

Looking at that case again, I'm suddenly realizes that it only has 4 usb ports and they are all in the front, I doubt I'd be okay with that.

The processor is a socket AM3+, so it fits the motherboard

The memory is standard DDR3, so it will fit

The 760 will fit in any pcie slot

The power supply has enough 6 and 8 pin connections for the video card.

And all of it will fit in any standard atx case.

While the case may only have 4 usb ports which are all on the front the motherboard has plenty, and those will be accessible from the back.

Also holy hell that motherboard has a ps/2 port. I didn't think they still put those on anything.

oooh okay, so it is just about whether they will fit or not, I though there were compatiblity issues between the pieces. Well that makes things easy.

New idea, do you guys think it would be a good idea to get a new case and take the pieces from my pre-made Gateway ( >.< shut up) and put them in the case and then simply upgrade one piece at a time? That would be far more do-able moneywise for me.

Are there any issues with that idea, aside from 1) possiblity of pieces not fitting, and 2) possiblity of me breaking a piece and being out of luck.

I looked up my computer and here is the model http://www.newegg.co...N82E16883113188

It looks like the CPU motherboard and graphics card are all intergrated, which I imagine would be an issue.

Would it be possible to make this into a new computer? What pieces would be able to fit in a full sized case properly and work.

Also, if I change my motherboard and/or CPU will my Windows 7 license still work on the harddrive?

You could keep the motherboard/processor and add everything else.

And no, if you change the motherboard windows will no longer work.

cool, I'm going to do that then, means I can start now rather than have to save up 1k over the new few months.

my Asus Sabertooth FX has one, it's a new board and it's pretty high end. I was pretty surprised they had it as well. I think they do it because some mechanical keyboards still come in ps/2.

was planning on getting my case and it turns out that newegg is having a 25% off sale on specific cases!

http://promotions.ne...tml?icid=240038

which case should I get, keeping in mind it has to fit my gateways pieces.

also should I get a power supply from them as well or will my gateways power supply work for now?

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16883113188 here is the Gateway again for comparison.

edit:

nevermind, just went with the Rosewell.

I've always been a fan of the 900D, Corsair makes solid cases though, get what looks good to you.

I'd go ahead and get a new power supply. The one in the gateway won't run the card you want.

Actually, I have a question too.

I was shown this website before and was told it was the best if you want to build your own PC and don't know exactly what you're doing. http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Has anyone else used the builds from this site and found it good?

I've never seen it before, but it does look like a fairly decent guideline. Seems to ignore how awesome an A8 or A10 can be in a low budget build though.

So it turns out that my old power supply will not work in the new case at all because the connecting wires are so small that the power supply would have to hover in order to connect properly.

I'm curious, if I connect things wrong and turn on the system will it just not work or will it cause damage? The main thing I'm worried about is the hard drive and the dvd drive connect to the motherboard using the same kind of cord, however there are 3 spots they could connect to.
