...To watch some anime.

I don't watch anime, but all of my friends do. I feel sort of like I'm missing out when I listen to them discussing anime characters and all that jazz.

So straight to it, what's a good one to start with? I'm open to anything.

Yeah, I have that exact same problem, except I'm more reluctant to watch anime. All I can tell you is that of the ones my friends tried to get me into, Death Note is the one I enjoyed the most.

I've heard of it, it sounds sort of serious and gloomy by the title. What's it like?

I've heard of it, it sounds sort of serious and gloomy by the title. What's it like?

I only saw the first episode, but in a nutshell, there's a high-school student (because anime) who's at the top of his class, he finds a notebook in which writing somebody's name within will kill them in a small amount of time. The reason the notebook's all funky is because it has a link to what are basically Japanese grim reapers. He thinks it would be a fly idea to use that notebook to destroy every criminal ever so the world will be a better place, but he has to hide it because this is all very illegal. A detective hears about this and starts investigating. As for the tone, it depends on what you consider serious and gloomy. It isn't a comedy or anything.

Once again, I don't watch anime and I've only seen one episode, so I may have gotten one or two things wrong.

Wow, I appreciate you explaining it. It actually seems like a pretty interesting scenario from what you've told me, I'm going to give it a look after work tomorrow and see how I feel about it. By serious and gloomy, I just meant not a comedy, and not so extravagant. It sounds sort of like how I imagined.

Hey, not a problem.

Probably the best place to start if it is your first anime would be Full Metal Alchemist. It is considered to be one of the best designed animes of all time and has a nice variety of horror, comedy, drama, and other genres to help you decide which one you like best.

I've definitely heard a whole lot about this one from my friends, so I'll give it a shot too, thanks.

I suggest Fairy Tail. It's my favorite anime by far, but to be fair I don't watch a ton of anime so I don't have a wide selection to pick a favorite from.

You should start with something that only has a twelve episode run to get a feel for what you like. I think Fooly Cooly only had eight or so episodes, plus, it's wackily funny and shows the weirdness that is Japan.

There are a bajillion different types of anime. Fairytail is good for simple action and weekly battles. Magi and One Piece are along the same vein. I'll say this: Fairtail and One Piece are on, like, episode five hundred each while the second season of Magi is about halfway done at episode thirty-ish. If you can't marathon stuff, the former two will be hard to handle.

If I remember who you are, and I probably don't, you liked Harvest Moon, so I say go harem rom-com. Boku Wa is about the best for that, but maybe not for beginners. I fucking love it, but I tried to get a friend to watch and he was bored.

If you can handle subtitled anime, and you should if you wish to enjoy the best ones that never get dubbed, two very funny animes ended just a week or two ago. Outbreak Company stars a nerdy Japanese NEET who's brought to Middle Earth to teach them about anime. It also has the most moe-tastic girl in the history of aww, Myucel. Funny stuff. Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita is about a hero who has to get a real job when lord Voldermort is slain. The next day Voldermort's daughter walks in and gets a job at the same Target he works at. Boobs jiggle like electric pudding this this one.

Space Dandy starts next week on Adult Swim, in English. It's actually premireing in North America without having to languish in Japan for three years. That would be a pretty good start, It's by the people who did Fullmetal and other legendary anime that you've never heard of before.

It's about a Dandy, in the space.

And yes, the 'the' is supposed to be there cuz' it's a fuckin' boss.

Going to second Full Metal Alchemist. My favorite anime. Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are also both very good.

If you watch Fooly Cooly, you're going to feel like you were on an acid trip.
