That is $6,000? WOW!

Is that for your job? Or, do you have enough money to throw around to have an expensive hobby? :P

 my job. They fronted the cost of that epic computer in front of it too, about $2k in hardware. There's a multi thousand dollar plot printer behind it too.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living?

That's a bit of a complicated question. >.>

I am the computer guy at a company that does maintenance and repair work to local refineries. Today I was designing safety awareness posters, but on any given day, I get asked to fix anything from iphones to car trunks, work on their website, general computer maintenance like removing viruses or performing upgrades, and even the occasional clerical work, helping to keep records up to date.

edit - also, that particular software is because they want me to learn how to do spool drawings and weld maps.

Yeah.
Well, it's not all oil, but chemicals in general. BP, Dow, Sterling, Marathon, etc.

Haha, pretty much.

A great spot to be in a growing company though I think.

*is jealous...

I sometimes use Blender on my job, I tried the 3DS max demo (yes its really the demo lol) but I could not wrap my head around it, and I was used to Blender for quite a while, so I convinced my Boss its the best solution for now.
Generally I think those software suites are overpriced. I mean its okay if its being used commercially, but what private user who just wants something to play with can afford this? Free alternatives are good but often more complicated then necessary... I would wish companies would realize that and develope more affordable buisiness schemes for kids and private people.

Yeah, 3ds max has all kinds of stuff, it's pretty overwhelming. So is Maya. I honestly don't think any of this is designed for a private user though, that's why there's such high pricing.

That is kind of like saying: Oh you are not supposed to use this, shoo shoo, we do not want to sell it to you anyways...

Which is bs, there are kids on the internet who do wonderous things with stuff like 3D Studio Max or Photoshop, but ofcourse they use pirated copies. If that would be adressed properly, who knows what would come out?

Autodesk has an educational version of almost every software in it's library for free. They normally just watermark the printout or something similar.

Don't you have to legitimate yourself somehow as an officially matriculated (sp?) student there? I think I once tried to download something from them but could not... I might be wrong though.

Not with most of them, no.

Microsoft and a few other companies require a ,edu email though.

@SpleenBeGone
What is your profession

I would not prefer the Educational Versions of AutoCad, and you can not use it in Real Works
