So the time has come for me to get a new means of playing music while working.

My old ipod gave out completely a few months ago and I borrowed my fiance's, but it is on its way out also, and the battery lasts maybe two hours. Not good enough for me.

I have done some mild research trying to find a decent used anything and figured I would ask you fine folk what your opinions on the matter.

If there are any brands or what have you that you prefer over any other.

Also to see if any of you are aware of any amazing sales that you could pass along, as I do know they happen, and a good many of you tend to have your ears to the ground when it comes to all sorts of hardware.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

I like Archos. I have an 8GB which cost me like £17 (~$25?) and it's brilliant. I mainly use my cellphone, but when I go to the gym I always use the Archos. Carries a ton of music, it's small, durable, long battery life and the volume is clear and loud. I got it in Asda, which is Britain's version of Walmart.

When I was deployed to east Africa I used a Sony Walkman MP3 player that would quick charge in 5 minutes via USB port and run for several hours.  It took a lot of sweat, moisture, dirt, sand and i still use it today (6 years later) even though all of the shiny plastic finish has worn off.  I would highly recommend that model if you can find it.

Looking myself on the Sony store, it looks like their new models are built into headphones:

Honestly, the new ones look even better.  As mine isn't water proof, just water resistant.

Battery Charging (Approx) : USB-based:
1.5 Hrs (full charge)
3 Minutes (approx. 60 minutes playback)1
Battery Indicator : LED Battery Life Indicator (Green/Orange/Red)
Battery Life (Approx) :
MP3 @ 128 kbps = 8 Hrs.;
Linear PCM @ 1411 kbps = 7 Hrs.
Power Type : Built-in Rechargeable Li-ion Battery

Note the quick charge of 3 minutes for 1 hour play back.  Really nice if you want to go for a <1 hour run or something and the battery is dead.

As someone who owned a walkman phone, I can confirm that they are damn good music players and durable.

Personally, I just use my phone to play music, but at this point, you're going to get what's advertised pretty well, the only difference is going to be music management.

You should make a nagios api that plays different music when infrastructure dependencies are down.  Then give me the code.

I use my ipad to jam music. 1st gen, cost me $230. Battery lasts 2 days of continuous usage. Best/longest lasting battery of all my musical devices.

I have an 8Gig Ipod touch, has a large crack on it... pretty average device....

I used to jam music on my PSP, I had a 512MB chip, I wouldn't recommend this because I screwed up ALL of my earphones and it's real awkward carrying around the psp in ur pocket.

I had an mp3... my 1st music device.... 128MB... only fit 20 songs (If lucky) Ended up breaking when I bailed on my skateboard.
