You should look into Doctor Who, I'm not a fan myself but it's a very good Sci-Fi show as far as I know. Also Fringe is a good show too, although I'm not sure if that's on Netflix or not.

Doctor Who definitely. Start with the ninth doctor, which starts in 2005, see how it goes. If you catch up and like it, try some of the classic stuff.

I've recently gotten into the new series of Battlestar Galactica. That's another great show.

There's also a show call Continuum which I liked. It's about a woman, Kiera, from 2077 who time travels to 2012 to stop terrorists (or freedom fighters, what I like about this show is the lines between good and evil are somewhat blurred) from changing the events that expired that leads up to how they live in 2077.

From there it becomes more of a cop show since Kiera makes use of the police force, but unlike cop shows, the story continues to progress. Kiera learns that the government from the future has some blood on their hands as well, and sometimes she'd had to do the wrong thing as a cop for the better of the future. That and I think I may have a small crush on Alec, the tech whizz in the show. I really liked the first season, and the second season started recently I think.

If you are a fan of Jim Henson puppets, I recommend Farscape!
Lots of alien goodness!
