By "RPG" I mean a dice-rolling sort of RPG. In case the location of the thread wasn't a hint. =P

I'm hesitant to call it a tabletop RPG, though, because while I intend for it to share some of the conventions of tabletop gaming, what I really want to do is write a game is designed to be played over the internet, on forums or social sites.

My working title is Alone Together.

The idea is that the characters are all internet folks, like you and I, who know each other but don't really *know* each other.

Aside from that, I've been toying with some ideas for the setting and the mechanics of the game.
I think that, in most but not all cases, the action will take place between 'posts.' The idea being that the characters are going on dangerous adventures while they're away from their computers, but then they come back and talk about them afterward. The Game Master could run adventures individually, in private message systems. There could even be team-ups, where the fictional characters (fictionally) meet up with each other in real (but not really real) life in order to team up for an adventure.

I'm not sure if I want it to run in real-time, yet, because that could be pretty slow, but it could also be really immersive. In any case, the chronological system will have to be established. I feel like allowing time to flow the way it does in other RPG's will not work for this game.

I also don't know what setting would be best, yet. Obviously it ought to be something modern or futuristic, because of the whole computer aspect, but then again it could work with letters as well. Either actual letters or posts that simply pretend to be letters.

Anyway, I would really like on or more people to help me work out some of the details and maybe help me write a book. I could do it by myself, but I think that I prefer to have other people's input. It keeps me from running off too far into my own little world, and writing really incomprehensible systems.

If we get something together, perhaps we could even playtest it on the nerdforum? Or at least with nerdforum members.

Anyone interested?

Your idea could work, easily, you could do a working prototype with a forum and then pay for a coded website as the final project.

There are alot of things to design, though, since you're working from scratch.

For a project like this, it would be really insightful to start with the interface.

I'd like the interface to be pretty modular.
Like, you should be able to play this game on any forum that has a private message system, or on facebook.

If it's not adaptable enough, then it kinda fails at my main goal; which is to be able to play tabletop RPG's with online friends without having a system that's crippled by its format.

I mean, I want to write a system that works on any forum you happen to play it on.
I don't want to have a dedicated interface. If that makes sense.

Just like any tabletop game. You play it wherever you happen to be.

So, like, a kinda-but-not-tabletop rpg, but played on forums, preferably through the pm system

yeah, sounds possible, but again I would start with interface, for lack of a better word.

More or less /how/ people are going to play the game, and what the end result will be for the user

Not only through the PM system, but also through posts.

Righto. Thanks for the advice.

From what I got from the first post, this sounds more like a RP that people do on forums now. Lemmi see if I got this right, play devil's adv, then get some answers.

A group of three people and a DM are playing. Player A logs on and tells everone the story of how he killed a dragon today. He is then awarded XP or something.

Repeat, but with player B and C going on a quest together earlier today.

DM awards XP and a special weapon or item or something, then tells them about a dragon that is rampaging in a nearby Starbucks. The next day they tell the DM how they beat it.

Is this how you’re envisioning it? Because that’s the scenario I got from your first post.
Are dice rolls used? If so, how? Will the DM just open a program on his own computer or will everyone so it’s fair? That’d be independent from the forum or board, so is it extra?

I think it’s a cool idea, I’m just not sure how the messaging system would work, and my understanding is probably far off.

That's essentially what I'm going for NoDanico, yes.
I imagine the actual dragon-slaying will take place in PM's, usually. Dice rolls will occur, and I would actually like for there to be a pretty in-depth rules system.
So in a sense it would resemble forum RP's as they exist, but more governed.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but that's the thrust of it.

Magic the gathering RPG would be cool. you could travel the planes and battle planeswalkers. Another RPG I'd like to see would be minecraft.

PS forgive me if this has nothing to do with the conversation, I just read RPG ideas and thought I'd right this up

I created a DND game with my party on google drawings, we can't use google + or play or what ever because we use our school computers.
