A friend of mine is looking for a new pc, because his current one has a motherboard which only supports DDR1

He asked me my opinion on his setup, but my information is outdated, and I don't know about the performance of these parts.
Anybody wanna come to my aid?

Go modular on the power supply - it's worth the price.
I also can't find the m/board, care to toss a link? The one I've found only has USB 2.0.

Depending on what he's going to do with it, I'd go with an i5 instead.
And modular power supplies are really nice, like emo said.

Do any am3+ boards support usb3 without 3rd party stuff?

I'm surprised he found an AM3+ board that didn't support USB3.0, lol.

Hrm, I could have sworn there was a big deal with only FM1/2 chipsets offering usb3 by default.

That's the board I ordered for my Vishera. I'm real shady on ASRock but we'll see how it goes.

I've had pretty good luck with them. Honestly I've only ever gotten two dead mobos and they were both MSI.

I meant for long term use. ASRock generally sells their boards cheaper so I'm afraid they're putting on cheap china capacitors and the board will fry after a year or two. Here's hoping it's just my paranoia. :x

Oh, it's possible. The oldest one I have in use at work currently is just over a year.
Personally, I try to use Asus boards for my own products when possible, and I have a coworker who swears by Sabertooth boards for his setups. He's had a bulldozer chip since launch, and has used multiple others on them as well.

Yeah, if I need something reliable I'm always going to go with ASUS - their sabertooth boards are a bit pricey for me, though.

They're a bit on the pricey side, but a good asuse board can be had for less, depending on what you need from it.

Pretty nice board - only down side is the SATA 3gb/s and not 6gb/s but I wouldn't consider that a deal breaker.

Yeah, I don't see a SSD on his list. I can't imagine the extra bandwidth makes a difference on mechanical drives, does it?

I think the 10k rpm drives can exceed 3gb/s burst reads (not that the current one is a 10k rpm) but having room to expand is good.

Even if you're only starting with 2 sticks of RAM I would always recommend having 4 slots, for example.

He said he wanted to upgrade to an ssd later on when he's got more money, but that he wants an HDD to start with.

Naw, you're right. Turns out 10ks max out at 157MB/s.
