This is a great example of urban farming, and how easily you can make it work with just a very simple setup.

Hehe, racism.

I read this article a while back about the police setting up a raid on a grow operation, which they spent months planning and getting the paperwork.
Then when they kicked down the doors of the apartment they suspected to be growing marijuana all they found was a handful of college students growing hydroponic tomatoes to sell at farmer's markets to offset thier tuitions.

Hilarious.

I wonder if this guy ever gets the gears from the police thinking hes up to no good.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

I read this article a while back about the police setting up a raid on a grow operation, which they spent months planning and getting the paperwork.
Then when they kicked down the doors of the apartment they suspected to be growing marijuana all they found was a handful of college students growing hydroponic tomatoes to sell at farmer's markets to offset thier tuitions.

:lol: That's awesome. I know bitcoin farmers get busted sometimes too. They really need to go off of more than the electric bill.

I don't think they can establish probable cause purely off of that. Did the PD just call them/knock on their door?

It's my understanding, at least from the article that I read a while back, that it was a full raid on the house, door breaching and all.

I'm sure you know, but high power bills are a telltale sign for indoor grow ops

Not that it matters, the police and DEA can honestly do whatever they want

I mean, you can't get a search warrant without probable cause; power bill alone (from my understanding) isn't enough to form probable cause so they can't just bust your door down.

1. Present sparse amount of evidence to judge [a judge, mind you, that you're buddy-buddy with, you guys will probably have brunch later that day]
2. Receive search warrant
3. Raid house

They do it all the time

Most people will have you believe they need a mountain of evidence, but in a lot of places [like California] where illegal grow ops are a persistent problem, the bar for "probably cause" gets lower and lower

I don't think it's that simple, though - if the only probable cause is the power bill I'm pretty sure any court would throw out the evidence obtained under a violation of the 4th amendment.

More often than not it is. My cousin got raided by the DEA because a disgruntled employee said he was running a meth lab, and he's been arrested on marijuana charges before, nothing else. The found nothing, but took his vacuum sealer because it was drug paraphernalia.

I mean, I don't doubt that depending on what the guy said was more than enough for probable cause with any form of prior drug charges; that's a lot more solid than a power bill. Someone claims a guy is cooking meth, prior drug charges, yeah, reasonable to search their house. Someones power bill is high? Suspicious but not enough to deem a warrant, IMO. Most people that grow burn their stems and seeds for this reason - garbage is searchable, stems and seeds + power bill can deem a warrant.

Can I just ask? Do your state laws over-ride your federal laws? Because I see so many laws that have been passed that I would consider 'unconstitutional', the one for instance where biology was banned in some southern state schools and replaced with creationism, surely the right to teach biology is covered in your Constitution under freedom of speech?

If the constitution doesn't grant the federal government control of it the state law is the deciding factor. A state law will be repealed if found unconstitutional, though.

Not to interrupt a perfectly lovely legal debate, but back to the topic at hand, I LOVE aquaponics. I'm a big eco-nut and surivalism freak, so self-contained systems like this always get my riled up. I'm planning on giving it a shot once I get a bigger place(for some reason, my wife isn't too keen on taking up a third of our one bedroom apartment with fish).
