I've looked into the books but never actually played a game of it.
I've always loved it, conceptually, though. I've just never been exactly certain of the system. Having never tried it I can't say whether I like the mechanics or not.
But the world is great.
I don't think he needs to be immortal. I think all he needs to do is to write the right story. Because some stories do live forever.

it was a Fasa game. the same ppl that published Mechwarrior and Battletech. they all used a weird die 6 system. it ends up being complicated as all hell lol.

Complicated doesn't necessarily bother me. I'm more concerned with whether or not it is reasonably balanced and offers a nice variety of creative freedom with character creation.
The thing that turned me off to D&D in the end is that the classes were massively unbalanced and you ended up pretty railroaded. Prestige classes solved some of that, but that also sometimes drifted into the realm of silliness.

lots of creative freedom imo, however the ppl i played with always bent the rules wherever races were concerned if the player had a good backstory. the magic system was like college math to me since we were always drunk and stoned when we played. we hardly touched that aspect of the game. the cybertechnology was the shit. our runs were like bullet ballets that almost always ended in death and destruction.
