Okay first off, this is NOT a thread about pirated software so move along citizen.

Still there? Okay.

Software is good but it can get damn expensive if you do not like to compromise yourself and your system potentially, so thankfully there are people out there releasing their products into the open for free, or at least let you check it out before you buy.
What is your favourite free software you use, may it be for imageediting, musicmaking, keeping your computer healthy, recreation, games... you get my drift.

I like Blender 3D a lot since it has evolved from a quirky open source software to a serious application used in companies as well as by homeusers (I use it at work too), its completely free and open.

Blender is pretty cool, I've never spend enough time to quite get the hang of it though. I think my favorite might be GOM media player, I use it quite often in both windows and linux. I like that it's nice and clean, very simple to use, and works great for me.

avidemux
It was my windows movie maker alternative for some time

What I really liked about it was the scripting options and the ability to load things into a template
it made my life pretty easy when trying to segment an 120 minute video into 15 minutes a peice

Also, it is the only movie maker I could actually create movies I could upload to youtube with
Suprisingly

I used a DVD recorder to record my video, then I had to open up the VOD with something
ANd this did it dandilly :)

xampp

its so nice to have an installer for everything, works great on windows, kinda messed up on linux
Right now my current install was done through installing individually apache, PHP and mysql
Unfortunately, I don't have xml-lib (which is something I use heavilly) so I have to install it. Unfortunately, when I try it says I already have it... so... basically its something I need to fix which far more annoying than just using the server I paid for and Filezilla

But yeah, xampp is a great package

Filezilla

view and edit please
I feel I'm working locally
server is easy

-Formula1, a haiku for Filezilla

Magic Workstation

If you like magic the gathering and want to play with other people but don't like to pay money
This is a reasonable solution

Since this is a very open ended system, each player has to play without having the rules slap them in the face
because of this, you have to make sure your opponent knows what your doing and you know what they are doing on the fly
People generally play by the rules though which is nice just because its a free place to practice standard
People want to actually test decks, not necessarilly win 100%

I especially liked it during Alara, Zendikar
I had an awesome deck that did reasonable against Jund, and could handle superfreinds alright. Not so good against Bant though (lotus cobra and knight of the reliquiry are so good)

But, it doesn't work will with wine without tweaks.
And I haven't used windows in sometime. But I may install it again if I like dark ascension

Shoddy Battle/Pokemon Lab

Many an hour has been spent on this game, Doing a ninjask baton pass into scizzor deathblow or Using my Dusknoir to Flash and my opponents into frustration. or what about my gengar lead that put in work with his 1.5x special attack

Good times

Pokemon online is a great thing, especially when you don't have to put in the work for them
You just choose your pokemon, name your stats, name your moves and you got the legal pokemon of your choice :)

I forget what my favorite team was, but I was competing with a lot of OU teams with UU pokemon
I was pretty happy :)
When salamance when to Uber, things kinda got messed up though just because he was pretty easy pickins for my team

On the subject of filezilla, have you ever tried FireFTP for firefox? It's the only ftp service I've found that's simpler to use, at least for me.

Yep, just another tab. I love it, just a few nice big file directories to switch back and forth. You can set programs to open different files as well, and if you set up all the information, you can right click and view the file online without having to navigate to it.

DosBox - Awesome for playing old games like Simant

TrueCrypt - A powerful on-the-fly file and drive encryptor, though it's rumored the government has a backdoor key to it.

Notepad++ - My absolute favorite syntax highlighting text editor.

WinDirStat - A HDD space analyzer that can give you a visual space graph of what exactly is taking up so much room on your hard drive.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

I swear by it every time I need to free up HDD space. "Oh wow, why do I have a 40GB Blu Ray ISO of that in my downloads folder..."

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - If you don't have this program on your computer (Windows) for security, you don't know what having a safe computer is.
Notepad++ - Need I explain?
Visual Studio - I'm a C#/C++/VB.Net lover, visual studio is god to me.

Visual Studio is a very powerful program, I'm glad Microsoft offers a free version of it.

Good thread...

For me:

- FileZilla to connect to my webserver,
- Notepad++ For programming,
- WINE for running windows programs on Linux,
- Malwarebytes for searching for and destroying malware rarely have any anyway,
- CrystalDiskMark for measuring the data transfer rate on my HDD (Currently 128MB/s Read and 121MB/s Write),
- Pale Moon more stable firefox clone,
- Winamp for Media,
- VLC Media Player, need i say more?,
- MyBB (Web software but still software) for my forum (Soon to be EchoBB however (My own forum software)),
- DS3 Tool for adding compatibilty for my PS3 controller to my PC games,
- XAMPP (Server software (PHP, MySQL, PERL and something else i think) a vital tool in the creation of my forum software and other projects (Saves me from having to upload files to an external server every time i make a change).

Probably more, but i'm not going to go through them all.

Also, I'll suggest the same as I did to formula one, give FireFTP a try if you haven't. It's an amazing setup.

Have an external server and upload your files every time yo make a change. Time consuming may it be. But it is still a viable solution.

It's a great and useful topic, so I will refresh it. Interestingly, the situation has changed a little over the past few years. We no longer use freeware - more often, these are simply free web applications. They are useful for work, for example:
https://trello.com (list-making application)
https://www.marinaratimer.com/ (if You like pomodoro method...)
https://www.livewebinar.com/ (for online meetings)
https://witeboard.com (a real-time whiteboard for your team)
