The Lord of the Rings

I started this topic because I need to know if I am the only one who was annoyed that the Tom Bombadil scene from the Fellowship of the Ring (book) did not make it into the movie - not even the extended edition. I think it would have been a great scene; including Old Man Willow and the barrow wights.

What did you miss in the transition from book to film?

Everything that didn't make it from the books to the movies annoys me.

And everything they changed. Like character designs, and equipment... and personality.

They also changed the characters' appearances and stuff quite a lot. Boromir had black hair in the books, but they changed that because people wouldn't be able to distinguish between him and Aragorn (morons). In the books Legolas used a single dagger, in the movies he had two. The movies portrayed Gimli as carrying three axes, in the books he carried one, etc.

Little changes that bug the crap out of the book fans XD

Tom Bombadil was a poorly conceived character in the books, so I don't blame them for not including him in the movie.

If Gandalf really gave two shits about saving the realm he would have just given the ring to Bombadil and sent him on the journey.

He is not only immune to the power of the ring, he seems to have his own power over it.

He can wear the ring without being affected by it in any way, he can see Frodo when he puts the ring on and is invisible to everyone else, and when they are staying at his house he does a magic trick and makes the ring disappear then reappear at his whim.

Galdalf even points out afterward that the ring has no power over Tom Bombadil, but then closes the hatch on the idea of giving it to him instead of Frodo by saying that he wouldn't take the ring seriously and would most likely misplace it.

So basically Tolkein wrote a character that made the entire story so far and from then on redundant, and then did a few lines of dialogue in the next book to make sure it wasn't a plot hole.

Yea, a lot was changed. And Boromir was supposed to die at the beginning of the Two Towers. I know Tom's character would have created a weird paradox, but that whole scene would have been cool anyhow.

And now with the Hobbit; Peter Jackson is just doing his own thing adding Legolas in and stuff. Oh well :/

I haven't even watched The Hobbit for that very reason. That and I don't feel like paying £15 for the blu-ray.

Yep.

The order of operations along the whole story arc of the movies don't really line up quite right either due to a books ability to have several chapters take place at the same time.

Truth be told I find LOTR's really boring. I've never made it all the way through the 3rd movie. 

The Hobbit was awesome in the fact that it put me to sleep on my 13 hour flight!! (TY PJ!!!)

My country goes ape shit over this franchise, heck, they've even turned Matamata into a tourist attraction Hobbit Town. 

$90 to see a hut in the side of hill??? GET FARKED!!!!!!! lol

Truth be told I find LOTR's really boring. I've never made it all the way through the 3rd movie.

I know exactly what you mean. Hasn't floated my boat either. Just too long and too much mumbojumbo to take it. I would never endure that sort of punishment by seeing them in the theatre. lol

I don't really mind when things get changed. 
Why? Because books are books and movies are movies. 

If they put everything from the book in perfectly, the movies would sucks *as movies*. Those things make sense only in the context of a book.

Remember, the creators of the films have their own creative ambitions apart from what Tolkien wanted. 

Hell, my favorite director of all time (Kubrick) was notorious for this. He stripped the stories down to their bones and rebuilt them in movie form. This ended up creating some pretty great films.

Go read the book that Dr Strangelove was based on.
