Thinking about trying out an LFS setup. Basically, the point is that you compile everything from scratch. Nothing comes with except a vanilla linux kernel that you build into a fully working system.

Has anyone else thought about doing this?

I once knew a guy who did that, called it his own operating system. I'm not sure how well it went for him.

Yeah, I wouldn't run it as my primary os. But I thought it might be fun to try out on and old machine that I have lying around.

In the advanced operating systems course at my school I think that is exactly what they do.

Anyone can take the UNIX shell and make their own OS so it shouldn't be to hard to make a simple one. Though it would probably lack serious functionally.

To be honest I don't really remember

but I looked at the instructions we got and I think we used a cross compiler to create the kernel for the linux system and busybox for the root file system.. I'd give you the pdf with the explanation but it is in german I'm not sure if that would help ;)

Yeah, sorry, only english and a little french here.

I think I should be able to get by with the docs on the website, though.

Anywho, I need to get some shit done before I get enough free time.
