We don't really need numbers to tell us the Wii U's flopping, but figures released today quite clearly spell it out. Something's gotta give at Nintendo, and that something is head honcho Satoru Iwata's salary, and that of his chums. The AFP is reporting Iwata's paycheck is to be cut in half, which is the same reduction he took as recompense for poor early uptake of the 3DS, while several of his execs will see a 20 to 30 percent drop.

Sales figures right here: http://www.engadget....es-figure-2013/

All I'll say is this.

I told you so.

It's not surprising given Nintendo's 'fuck you' attitudes to so much lately.

They have a gold mine of people who grew up with Nintendo consoles, why don't they cash in on that? How long have fans been waiting for an Earthbound remake?

I think the problem with an Earthbound remake is the same as the reason for Square Enix not developing a Final Fantasy 7 remake. It's not easy money. Personally, I never played Earthbound, so I'd have little interest in it to begin with. However, a full remake on current consoles would cost a ton of cash, whereas carbon-copy games like Mario Kart can be done much cheaper, and with more sales revenue. Because, to be honest, most people probably don't even know what Earthbound is now.

Don't get me wrong, I love nintendo. Prolly four or five out of my top ten favorite games ever are nintendo things. That being said, do want earthbound.

I do wish that there were more good titles on the wii u (zelda, metroid etc.).

ALSO: I don't think nintendo actually owns earthbound. Might be wrong about that.

I doubt this will be the end of Nintendo, the 3DS is really the only system I buy new games for anymore.

The hate towards the WiiU is the worst :(

Working in a games store all I hear is "hardcore" gamers bashing it without ever even having played it (cause cod ain't as good on it bys).

Nintendo unfortunately does a poor job of promoting it in North America (and I guess other places) which allows online gaming websites to just constantly post negative things about it. Doesn't help with sales at all. And they've been super slow on the exclusives (Bayonetta 2 is something to look forward to though! AND DK: Tropical Freeze!)

But yeah, I don't think they'll be going anywhere. This has happened before.

I think the hardcore crowd is justified in their dislike, though. Iwata himself said that the Wii-U is meant to be Nintendo's break into the hardcore market. But over a year on, it hasn't gotten anywhere with that. It has little support from established developers, and what it does have is made up primarily of remakes of PS3/360 games. Sure, they've got DK, Mario, and Zelda. But for people like me, who don't enjoy those series'? There's nothing there for us.

So? If you haven't bought a Nintendo System before than the fact that you aren't buying one now is completely irrelavent.

The whole point of Nintendo is that it is a market built on exclusives, you can't get their games elsewhere. The problem with the Wii U is that they launched it early so they could be the first on the scene but forgot to launch anything good with it. Exclusivity doesn't mean anything if you don't have games. Once they get games though it will mean a lot more.

Their IPs aren't what need to sell the system. I own two DS' and a 3DS, I've had every iteration of the Gameboy ever released. I also own a Wii. Their own IPs don't interest me one bit, I couldn't give a crap what princess Mario's castle is in right now. All the other Nintendo consoles had great exclusive titles by third-party devs, which the Wii-U sorely lacks. My favourite games on all of those consoles weren't developed by Nintendo, because Nintendo are bad at making games.

Woah woah woah! Granted, the more recent titles in their ips haven't exactly been great (looking at you, skyward sword), but c'mon, saying that nintendo is bad at making games? This is completely unjustifiable. Ocarina of time? ALttP? Super Metroid?

Having an opinion is one thing. Perhaps YOU don't personally enjoy nintendo's games, but you really can't deny that the above titles are very well made (with the exception of skyward sword).

Nintendo pisses me off because of the general "screw you" attitude towards gamers, not the quality of their games.

I'm not personally a fan of boarderlands (as an example), but I can't really deny that its a terrific game.

Why does everyone keep on raggin' on Skyward Sword? I mean, I never played it, but it looked great. As a totally over-biased fanboy, I must discard all complaints directed at Nintendo.

Sure I can. They are (present tense) bad at making games. Personally I didn't enjoy Ocarina of Time, I never understood its popularity. It was one of about 20 N64 games I owned, but I never bothered much with it because it wasn't enjoyable. I did like A Link to the Past, and I've never played Super Metroid as I was a Sega kid. But the pitfall you've fallen into is that the examples you've shown are old as hell. It's like saying "You can't say Sonic Team are bad, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 didn't suck!" or "You can't say Square are bad, Final Fantasy VII is the best game ever!" Sure, games they made over ten years ago might be good, even great. But to believe they can ride on that reputation is foolish, and is exactly the reason they're bad at developing games now. Gamers got complacent, and gamers got sentimental. Nintendo could release Super Mario Potty Training and it would probably be a contender for GOTY because people suck Nintendo's dick.

Regarding Borderlands, I can easily deny it being a terrific game, or even a passable game. And I enjoyed Borderlands, a lot. I completed the original game 8 times (16 if you count playthrough 2) on two platforms. I completed every bit of DLC they released for it. Do I think it's a good game? No. I think Gearbox fell into the same trap Peter Molyneux did with the Fable games. They promised a lot, and didn't really deliver on it. The supposed millions of guns? Sure, I guess you could say there were millions of guns. But they were all carbon-copies of other guns with slightly altered stats or different skins, it would be akin to saying COD has over a thousand guns because each attachment, each skin, makes it a whole new gun. It doesn't. Add to that their pitiful security (with very little coding knowledge I was able to hex-edit my save file and totally change key aspects of the game) and yeah, I can definitely say it wasn't a great game.

You don't have to like or dislike something to have an objective opinion of it. Like I said, I liked Borderlands, but I can see its flaws. Lots of the games I love aren't perfect by any stretch of the word, but I don't poo-poo criticisms towards them with "well yeah but the devs made a good game 17 years ago".

Um... no. Nintendo is perfect. Objective fact proven by science and all gods of all religions as narrated by Morgan Freeman and Rod Serling as directed by Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick accompanied by the soothing melodies of The Beatles and Mozart as prepared by a team of world class chefs from Sweden Land as delivered by RespawningEnemy.

Dude, Microsoft and Sony both also produce crappy games. Lots of people like Nintendo for the familiarity of games that don't PLAY a lot of games, lots of people like Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Sega, COD, BF, whatever have you for the same reasons. I've seen just as many dick suckers for those companies as Nintendo. Don't be a hater. Just have fun with what you like, I mean in the end, whether Nintendo makes Super Mario Potty Training and people play it doesn't really affect you anyways.

I never said Sony or Microsoft didn't make bad games, but since this is a Nintendo topic, I'm hardly going to take those companies as the core point.

"Don't be a hater" is one of the reasons gaming is stagnating. People take opinions on games as personal insults. Legitimate concerns? Fuck off you're just a hater. Technical problems proven by various sources? They're just haters who don't know what they're talking about.

It's crap.
