#64006 Iron Man 3, Extended look.

It actually looks pretty good, ever since Disney bought Marvel there seems to be a new momentum to their work. I respect Downey Jr, got to be one of America's finest actors... on screen and off.

#63918 Yamie Chess - math/chess/stem toy for kids

Posted by japanseas on 05 February 2014 - 08:54 AM in SCIENCE!

Interestingly, have any of you guys heard of PatrickJMT on YouTube? He's a famous math educator there along with Khan Academy and he's got over 80 million+ views and is on the Yamie Chess math team. He just published a video on Yamie Chess here:  (explains math concept behind it...neat)

Okay. Yeah I saw that too. Like you said, they're probably trying to balance it with the mom/daughter playing in this picture here (second from top):  https://www.yamiechess.com/parents

More definitely needs to be done to get girls into STEM anyway. Most girls in tech I know (who go into it as a career) are cleverer than most of the guys anyway.

The other thing I liked about Yamie Chess is that's is basically created by a woman USA chess champion, Jennifer Shahade. I read where she's doing a simul with the Boy and Girl Scouts later this year, so it seems quite balanced: https://www.yamieche...on-simul-scouts

Welcome, robot overlords

What's amazing about this story is that the company is only 2 years old when Google acquired. That's $250 million for each year! What could they have possibility been doing that makes it worth that much to the Google Guys: http://www.theguardi...tartup-deepmind

#63895 Yamie Chess - math/chess/stem toy for kids

Posted by japanseas on 04 February 2014 - 09:31 PM in SCIENCE!

lol. sexist against men or women? It's mainly math phds from what i can tell. Oh, and Jeremy Silman - he's pretty well known in chess circles. Looking at the tech engineers/educators from MIT etc on their creators page here: https://www.yamiechess.com/advisors, there's some women there, mainly men tho. It looks interesting.

Okay. just seen this new chess/math toy called Yamie Chess on my friend LA Examiner Derek Odom's site ;), looks cool. does anyone else play chess here? good to see new games for kids pairing chess and math together, the most i had as a kid was playing around with calculators. then maybe meccano. pulled pic from their homepage, got to be the most chess-driven educational toy i've ever read about...

#63755 The Hobbit

Posted by japanseas on 02 February 2014 - 11:21 PM in Fantasy

I don't think it has been said here, but has anyone noticed a certain similarity in the Hobbit between the scene where Tauriel heals Kili from the Morgul wound with Athelas and the houses of healing in Lotr?

Now I think the houses of healing chapter in Lotr was cut by Pete Jackson, so I wonder if he thought of an opportunity to putting some of the idea back into the films at this stage? This would be typical of Peter Jackson if this was the case.

Can't believe I've just found this site only today, well better late than never. I'm Matti from Finland, computer science student currently in Australia on study placement. What else, umm? japan/pokemon lover, chess addict, general good guy:)
