So apparently there is an opcode to set old computers on fire...

21 September 2012 - 09:04 PM

I learned the other day that there is an opcode in the instruction sets of several old processors named HCF. This stands for "Halt, Catch Fire".

It locks the processor from accepting any other instructions, and beginnings toggling the bus lines as rapidly as possible. In some configurations, it's been known to actually burn the lines out and/or set fire to the machine. The only way to stop it is a hard-reboot.

I have no idea why this would ever be included in an instruction set, but it was originally undocumented and later discovered. Thought you guys would find it interesting.

Nerf Sniper Rifle

In order to get ready for the humans vs zombies game I just returned from, my friend and I spend a week building this in our machine shop: a bolt action, shell ejecting, gas powered nerf sniper rifle. It's so long it needs to be carried in two parts.

The co2/HPA cannister is not attached here. The propellant passes through the low-pressure regulator (which takes it down to around 20-30 PSI), and into the expansion chamber. The shell is loaded into the breach and the bolt is locked forward using the handle. The smaller red handle near the back is the trigger. After the dart is fired, you rack the bolt to eject the shell through the bottom of the reciever.

It makes the most satisfying whump in the world when you fire it. And the shell makes a nice clack when you eject it.

Multiplayer Notepad (aka IRC)

23 January 2012 - 03:10 PM

Is anybody interested in an IRC server?  I run one in my basement but it doesn't get much use anymore.  I'm finding it hard to continue to justify the power cost without users.

If anyone wants a place to talk outside the forum I can post the details.

Homeworld

12 January 2012 - 07:57 PM

Anyone ever played it? Homeworld 1 won game of the year in 1999, and basically defined a genre all on its own. It has remained my favorite game since its release, and I have yet to find another game that allows you to perform a pincer attack from the left, right, above, and below.

It's an RTS game where you control a fleet of space ships on a homeward journey. I'd definitely suggest looking it up for any of you strategy buffs. But be warned, this game is from the days when games were Nintendo Hard, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Let's get one thing out of the way...

Since this forum was posted on deviantArt, we're bound to get a wave of people who think HTML is a programming language, so let's nip this in the bud before it starts:

It isn't.

Thank you and have a nice day.
