#107491 Favorite IDE?

Yes, it's one of a number of semi-creative account names I've used on various platforms before discovering that it's taken on others.

#107265 Spleen's must have software list!

I use it every time I shut down the computer just to make sure everything is cleaned out. It usually deletes megabytes worth of data each time, sometimes just kilobytes but not often. Computer gets clogged quickly.

My suspicion is that unless you are disabling caching, the reason you're deleting megabytes everytime is because the browser is rebuilding the cache every time. Methinks you're functionally doing this:

Caches expire as well, in general unless your storage is incredibly restricted or you're experiencing an error of some sort, the browser cache doesn't expand to fill every available space. If you are planning on dumping the cache basically between every use, may I suggest simply disabling the cache?

For folks who might be using Linux, let me suggest a few utils that are really worth having.

Albert is a launcher that behaves a lot like Spotlight/Finder with the popup, quicksearch of certain directories.

Guake is a terminal emulator that behaves like the console in a lot of video games, it pops down from the top of the screen and can be hidden and shown at will. I like it because it's able to maintain a session and pop in and out of focus. When doing config changes or development that ties into our test server I often SSH into the server on guake so I can change stuff locally, push it and then just pop guake back up to see what the effect was.

Terminator is a terminal emulator that can sub-divide and run multiple sessions in a window, side by side or in a number of configurations, I use this for standard terminal work in lieu of whatever comes with my distro.

Atom is a fairly robust editor/lightweight IDE. I use it for opening arbitrary code files for which I don't maintain a full IDE install. If I need to open a C# file or an Objective-C file I can use Atom to get basic syntax highlighting etc without going to great lengths.

I suggest getting the GIMP and learning at least a little about it. I'm no designer and the crap I made when I was 15 and thought I could do wonders was awful, but I can cut things out, crop, save to another format and the like. It's worth having around.

#106986 I Can Build It, I Have The Technology

Posted by HemoGoblin on 21 March 2017 - 08:53 PM

I built a bed of my own, I have to finish the headboard, but unfortunately the solid oak I was using ran me well out of money before I got there. On the bright side I got the bed done in time for my wedding, which means we did NOT spend the first night on a mattress on the floor.

As you can probably see it's 3/4" Oak plywood on the sides and ends. We made the drawers out of 1/2" crap-grad ply and used pressure treated deckboards(cut down obviously) to make drawer guides. Since the deckboards are sorta slick from the treatment and I used UHMW tape on the drawer edges, it slides alright. I could have done better with more money but they work well. The trim hides the ply edges relatively well and the internal structure has a sort of frame made of 2x4s. Basically at each end and between the drawers there are 2x4s laid against the interior of the ply and screwed in, then crossmembers are run from side to side. A sheet of 3/4" structural ply was screwed to this. This thing doesn't budge when my 300lb ass rolls over so it's pretty well solid. Which is good because my memory foam mattress weighs a *shit ton*.

The intent for the headboard is to have some shelving and probably integrate some outlets(essentially wire powerboxes to plugs) so I can charge my phone and run my CPAP without basically blocking the two drawers on my side of the bed.

As can be seen, the bed occupies basically the whole room and it's pretty much impossible to conceive of a dresser fitting into the room. As such I came up with this "Captains Bed" design. Between the drawers and the closet space at the foot of the bed theres enough room for our clothes. If we weren't lazy we'd probably not leave clothes at the end of the bed either.

EDIT: Apparently the images are huge, recommend just peeping the thumbnails or downloading them to open in a viewer that can zoom out a lot.

In my defense it was not far down the list when I decided to look for something to respond to.

#53107 What type of Wizard would you be?

Slavery in Egypt's time was a different thing anyway. Most of the time it was a conquered enemy that was enslaved, or they sold themselves into slavery for a time to pay a debt. In Israel any indentured or enslaved workers were freed every 7th year, with some exceptions.

Also, the US benefited from slave labor, but to state that we were built on their backs assumes many things that aren't true. Black slave labor wasn't that prominent as of the founding of the country, plantation culture came a good bit later. Indian enslavement took a chunk of time as well,  at least it took a long time to be a significant portion of the labor going on in the colonies. Even at that point it's not as if no one else worked, they just forced the worst onto the slaves. Plantation owners were a rich upper class, a great portion of the country had no slaves, or 1-2 house servants and the head of household still did the working. To boot, since the slaves were subjugated and prevented from education, basically all of the culture, technology and science of the time came from free men.

Had to be done.

Also, it happens worst when you are absolutely not aroused.

Talking to younger sister? Ding

Talking to Grandma? Ding

Watching tv and the cat walks up? Ding
If I was THAT screwed up I think I'd cut it off....

"A nerd must be inteligent, and ready to answer a question!"
Did anyone else read this in their Mr. Miyagi voice?
