Need Help with Symbolic Links in Windows [7]

21 October 2012 - 01:32 PM

I've started using symbolic links on my computer. This is mostly so that I can sync folders/files outside of my Dropbox and Skydrive folders. However, even though I know how to create symbolic links and have already created several, I really want answers to some questions before I go any further...

My Questions

1. Many guides I read emphasized that one should never ever create symbolic links within symbolic links because it can cause "looping"...but what is looping exactly? I can't find a definitive answer. Everyone is just like..."Looping is a very very bad thing that you don't want so avoid doing anything that can cause it." :\

2. Can looping occur with any kind of symbolic link--soft, hard, junctions...?

3. What constitutes a symbolic link within a symbolic link?* I can't find a straight answer about this either.

5. If I were to accidentally create a loop, is it correctable? How difficult would it be to fix/remove a loop?

6. What kind of symbolic link would be best for what I am trying to do with Dropbox and Skydrive? I am currently using junctions, but I think I am going to use soft links instead of junctions/hard links because soft links apparently don't take up storage space in Dropbox or Skydrive. Is there any drawback to using soft symbolic links instead of junctions [in this situation]? I don't think it matters, but I could be wrong.

7. If you can, please give examples of situations where using a particular type of symbolic link would work best / better / be preferable. Like, "use a soft link if you want to do this: _____" or even "don't use a hard link if you want to do this:_____" and please explain why.

*My Theories

This section is not necessary to read. It's just my pondering/rambling typed out--It helps me organize thoughts.
If you answer Question #3 please elaborate as much as I have in the following "spoilers".

The Index Page Looks All Janky Now

(see attached screenshot for visual)

It only looks like this on the main page. All other pages that I have visited look as usual. Is it just me?

Spoiler Tag

Is there a way to give it a custom title? Like, instead of "Spoiler" it will say something else more descriptive/accurate of what you've hidden? If this can't be done currently I'd like to turn this into a suggestion.

64 bit Web Browsers

14 September 2012 - 01:29 PM

Is anybody using one currently? I have to use one in my Network Client Operating Systems class.

We're installing 64-bit Windows Operating Systems (XP, Vista, 7, & 8) onto our hard drives for class along with software and my professor is requiring that all of the software we install be 64-bit as well (if possible). Chrome and Firefox still don't have an official [stable] 64-bit version available, so we've been allowed to use unofficial versions since we all agreed (including my professor) that Internet Explorer is crap--64 bit or otherwise.

We came to the consensus that we are all going to use Firefox-based browsers for consistency sake. They all pretty much look the same as Firefox and each other so :P Most people are using Waterfox or Pale Moon and a few people have Firefox Nightly* for some reason .__.

Personally, I went with Pale Moon because it runs faster (at least for me) and I don't like how Waterfox tries to trick you into installing the AVG Toolbar crap. I actually really like Pale Moon and have started using it at home since I have Windows 7 64-bit on my laptop. It's also portable which is nice :) I downloaded Waterfox at home too so I could do a more thorough comparison and for me it is only slightly faster than Firefox, but not nearly as fast as Pale Moon.

So, do you use a 64-bit browser or know of any others (Firefox derived or otherwise)?

Suggestion: Default Post Formatting

13 September 2012 - 09:27 PM

I've seen this feature on other forums. Users can set a default style for their posts--like font color, font face, font size, bold, italic, text alignment etc. etc.--akin to how most email services or software allow you to set default text-styling for your outgoing emails.
