Meh. I like historical fiction to be historical.

But alternate histories can be cool too.

I'm on your side on that - most of the time, a story can't get better or deeper than the Real True story.

However, as a history teacher I love that this movie has been made! Didn't like it myself (got through about half of it), butI'm pretty sure that my students won't volunteerily watch, say, "Lincoln". But they Will watch "Abraham Lincolb - Vampire Hunter", and then hopefully one of them will come to me and say "was he really a vampire hunter?", and BAM - I have a perfectly good angle of approaching The American revolution, the civil war, etc. etc.

My English teacher in high school made us watch that crappy Romeo and Juliet movie with Leonardo Dicaprio in it.
Then my history teacher made fun of the English teacher, and made us watch Gangs of New York in response.
Firstly because it is a great movie that takes place during said revolution, and secondly to make us not hate Leonardo Dicaprio so much because he is a much better actor by that time.

So, depending on what sort of school you teach at and their tolerance of awesome movies, I highly suggest watching gangs of New York to get your kids interested in the American Revolution.
Then you can watch Lincoln and point out that the same guy plays Bill The Butcher and Abraham Lincoln.
I think he even makes fun of Lincoln as Bill and voices strong opinions against his capabilities as president.

I highly suggest watching Gangs of New York because it’s one of the most awesomest of awesome movies of all time. Fun fact: the accent Daniel Day used don’t exist anymore. He studied old recordings to get it as authentic as possible. And Bill the Butcher doesn’t actually have any dialog, just one liners through the whole movie. IE:

That’s a wound!

Whoopsie daisy!

You see this knife? I'm gonna teach you to speak English with this fucking knife!

Each of the Five Points is a finger. And when I close my hand, it becomes a fist. And, if I wish, I can turn it against you.

And the movie Abraham Lincoln Vamp Huntr dosn’t explain it, but in the book you find out that Abe was brought back after he was killed by way of being fed vampire blood. He lives nowadays, as a vampire, hunting vampires. The movie really was shit.

Daniel Day Lewis commits so completely to the role that he is playing that he damn near becomes the person.
Just fantastic.

Also, perhaps that last bit should be in a spoiler dealie.
I have read the book, but others haven't, and we don't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment of a fantastic book.
