The suspect (who admitted to the arson) was taken to hospital for second degree burns on his arms and legs. Multiple news stations are reporting that he said to one of the police officers "they stole my novel, so I burned them". The suspect's name hasn't been released, though KyoAni confirmed that he is not a current employee. He also reportedly had a backpack full of knives and hammers, though I don't think this has been completely confirmed by law enforcement yet. The entire building isn't salvageable, though.

Yasuhiro Takemoto was just confirmed as one of the dead. A heavy blow, considering he was the lead director behind Full Metal Panic, Lucky Star, The Melancholy (and Disappearance) of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.

That's so awful. I haven't actually watched anime in years but I still know those series.

That's Japan for you. They don't have that many guns in Japan so you don't hear much about mass shootings over there. Instead, they resort to mass arson.
