I don't normally like to talk about tragic events, but Paris will remember April 15th, 2018. Both the roof and spire of Notre Dame's cathedral were destroyed by an "accidental" fire from a construction site.

Just think about all the hundreds of years in history suddenly destroyed.

It shall be rebuilt. And then we can all go and look at it and say, "Ah, yes, I remember when it was in flames. It was all over my tumblr dashboard."

At least the towers survived, but yeah. 865 years of history gone forever is pretty sad. 2018 already came and went. Did you mean to say 2019?

Whoops. Yeah, I meant to say 2019. I can't believe I still haven't gotten used to that.

What history was lost? The spire survived, the artwork and antiques are undamaged. The only thing that took any kind of damage is an organ that got wet, which can be restored very easily.

Really, it's amazing. They can restore the organ and they can restore the spire.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Museum was absolutely FUCKED by its fire. That shit can't be restored.

From what I understand - and I could be wrong on this - the entire wooden interior, the stained glass windows, the spire, the organ, and the roof were all destroyed.

The only things left were a few gargoyles, the towers, the cross, the crown of thorns, and some of the walls.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Museum was absolutely FUCKED by its fire. That shit can't be restored.

The one that burned in September? That was a tragic loss too, but it wasn't nearly as old as Notre Dame's cathedral.

AFAIK it was undergoing renovations at the time, so it was mostly empty. The spire did collapse, along with a bunch of woodwork, but it's all stuff that can be replaced.
