I haven't played either, but the colossal amount of detail that went into the city of New York for that Spiderman game is INCREDIBLE.

I haven't touched Spider-Man yet, but I've been playing RDR2 for the past week.
I have to say, it's pretty fucking good.
I was worried that they'd fuck it around and just try to cash in on the success of the previous game but they seem to have made an equally enthralling and beautiful experience. I'm finding myself roped into this one (heh) just as hard as the last and I couldn't be happier.
Well, I guess I'd be happier if the horses were a bit brighter and your guns didn't have to be constantly re-selected, including ammo type, every time you left your horse. And you can't sell older shittier weapons just to get them out of the rolodex. But that's sort of splitting hairs, and it's stuff that can and probably will be fixed in future patches, so I'm not too upset about it. Otherwise It's a pretty amazing romp through a story that feels just as gritty and appealing as the last.

I ended up going with Red Dead Redemption 2. Not sure if that was a good decision or not yet. The intro was boring, but the free roam seems just as fun as Red Dead Redemption 1 so far.
It's a bit of a haul at the beginning while it sets itself up and gets you into the characters and premise.
But once you finish the intro you can pretty much just fuck off wherever you want and adventure like a hero, or a villain.

Affray, I know I'm super late in asking you this, but did you choose to be mostly a hero or mostly a villain? I'm on chapter 3 and I still haven't decided which one I want to be yet. It's a bit of a haul at the beginning while it sets itself up and gets you into the characters and premise.

I rarely ever go bad, and never on a first play through.
It doesn't feel right to be a cunt and most games are designed to reward morally responsible choices so it's a double win for me.

I'm too much of a marshmallow to hurt anyone.
I'd do an evil route if it was fun, but if I actually had to kill people...

I've been playing RDR2 with my co-workers. Getting into firefights in the middle of towns is fun.

A female who plays RDR2? Didn't think I would see that. There definitely need to be more female gamers in this world. I'm not so sure why there's a shortage.I've been playing RDR2 with my co-workers. Getting into firefights in the middle of towns is fun.

My sister has played the SHIT out of the Borderlands games. We grew up playing stuff.

Is Borderlands something that's uncommon for women to play? I haven't played any of those, but the Borderlands trailers always looked very appealing. I really just miss having the money to blow on stuff like video games and spy gadgets. My sister has played the SHIT out of the Borderlands games. We grew up playing stuff.

Idfk, I don't think any games are uncommon for women to play, but I don't understand that gender-based shit anyway.

Well, there haven't really been a lot of female protagonists in video games up until recently. Video games are usually played by guys, but I just think it's very cool when girls play them.
Lara Croft
Aerith
Samus Aran
Zelda
Jill Valentine
Cortana
That's just off the top of my head and not dipping into the more modern games.
They're out there.

I guess I should have specified the time frame instead of just saying "recently". I was thinking like... before the past 25 years. To be fair, two of the ones you mentioned were from before 25 years ago, but all I was saying was that there were not nearly as many female protagonists as there were male protagonists in video games.Lara Croft
Aerith
Samus Aran
Zelda
Jill Valentine
Cortana

I'm sure there could also be other reasons for more male gamers than female gamers though.

The main reason is because weird people fixate on gender instead of playing the games.
In terms of female protagonists prior to 1993 (which is what I'm gathering from your "before the past 25 years" comment), the reason for the lack of them is because videogames were extremely simple back then. Gender roles didn't really take much of a precedent, but I disagree with the notion that it causes an issue.
Off the top of my head I can think of a fairly large number of prominent female protagonists or lead characters.
Reika Kirishima from Time Gal, which was basically Dragons Lair but with a female main character
Thyra the valkyrie from Gauntlet
Athena, one of the poster-girls for the King of Fighters franchise, who originally starred in her own games. "Athena", and "Psycho Soldier".
Samus, as Affray already mentioned. She first hit the screen in 1986.
Alien Syndrome gave the option to choose between a male or female protagonist. Didn't change the story or anything, but meh.
Princess Moonbrooke from Dragon Quest II.
Alis Landale from Phantasy Star. Strong, independent female lead character who took absolutely no shit from anyone. 1987.
Then you have the various side-scrolling fighters, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe etc. all bringing at least one female to the table. Also Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter etc.
Also what you need to remember is that the videogame industry is still very much a male-dominated industry. As a result of that, the art and story directions of most games were indisputably weighed towards a male audience.
As far as statistics go, this is a fairly useful read.
Something I ran into a couple of days ago however, which was most likely just an oversight on the developers part but a HUGE fuckup either way, is Hearthstone. The World Showdown of Esports (WSOE) hosted an all-female Hearthstone tournament in order to promote women in gaming, alongside other things. Overall the event was cool, but it turned into a shitshow because Blizzard decided to release a massive patch 2ish days beforehand, meaning the participants had very little time to adapt to the changes. Dumb move that made the whole thing worse than it should've been.
