She doesn't want more rights for women, she wants to generalize men as sexist woman undermining pigs. What rights do men have in our society that women don't?

I'm not implying that we don't have rights, I'm implying that Anita Sharkeesian is ridiculous, which she is. For Heaven's sake it's LEGO!

Her arguments stem largely from a western third wave feminist framework, from what I've seen she's chosen to focus her efforts on the gender disparity between men and women in consumerist culture, largely centred on gaming in many forms. We are bombarded with advertising and capitalist culture every moment that we engage in media, it's certainly valid to point out that a toy market that pushes out girls in favour of boys is not only unfair but myopic on the part of Lego. It pushes girls to the fringes, or indulges them in stereotypes that alienates the girls that don't conform to the mainstream.

 

Ultimately you need to ask yourself what your problem is with the video, or with her. What is the root issue that you take with her ultimately compelling the viewer towards embracing equality in the children's toy market?

I mean, I seem to recall one of her big bugbears with Grand Theft Auto was 'you kill women'. That and 'there are prostitutes'. She's just the new-age Jack Thompson, looking for something to blame for shitty people being shitty (to borrow one of Affray's phrases).

Indeed, and the other issue with taking aim specifically at a game like GTA, is it ignores the actual efforts to replicate the era of American culture that GTA takes place in. Like it or not, every era that GTA has covered, has it's own 'flavor' of social issues, that they go through great pains to recreate in a tongue in cheek fashion.

 

She may not like it, but, that's not her call, nor is it her or anyone's RIGHT to interfere with it. That's America's history. That'd be like doing a civil war era game and conveniently leaving out any kind of reference to slavery. Sorry, that shit happened, it's part of this countries history, and pretending it didn't won't solve a goddamn thing.

 

We have this big issue w/ people trying to rewrite history books to take a 'softer' tone on that whole 'pesky' slavery thing, not to mention the asinine attempts to interject creationism into science texts. I consider this really no different an issue.

 

Are there games where pointless examples exist, that could be rectified? Absolutely. Chris Metzen at Blizzcon discussed a very obvious one w/ Alexstraza and his daughter inquiring why she was in the middle of a war, dressed in a bikini. Great point. Fix it. I have no problems with that, it's not like I'm rubbing one out every time I head to Dragonblight to do old Dragon Soul runs. But, ultimately that's up to Chris Metzen. His child asked him a question, the question made sense, so he rectified Alexstraza's character model in Hearthstone (full armor). But, that's up to the designer to do. If you can provide a logical critique about it, many of them are actually pretty reasonable individuals. But, trying to whitewash socio-political issues of the 80's, 90's, 00's, in 'Murica? It makes her no better than creationists, or the GoP who hates to acknowledge slavery was ever a 'thing'.

 

Now here's where things get sticky (no pun intended). Provided laws are being followed, who has a right to interfere with another persons creative process? Who has the right to tell people what they can, and cannot dream up? Who has the right to tell people they cannot have this fantasy, or that fantasy. Personally, regardless of whether I find the content objectionable or not, I simply don't feel anyone has that right. It's not your call, it's not your money being invested, and you aren't required to buy, play, experience, watch, etc... any of that content. Deal with it. I will never, raise a finger, to censor, or edit someone's creative process. It's their dream, it's their vision.

 

That's what this really comes down to. People with an idea, and the money to invest in a project, have every right to pursue that project to their own ends, provided, as I said, laws aren't being broken.

 

The speech by Andrew Shephard (played by Michael Douglas), in the movie 'The American President' kind of rings true here (part of a larger speech, but this is the part I felt was most relevant):

 

"It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free"."

 

Free Speech, means free speech. Just like Sarkeesian would hate to be muzzled by any law, or group, or entity, so to would it be a shame to muzzle the creative process, just because you object to the content.

My issue is that she's blaming a company and product for trying to be more diversified which is what she's pushing for them to do! She's hypocritical and biased. Is it a problem that a company can be geared toward one gender? I don't see many six year old boys buying barbie dolls, do you? No because most boys don't like them just like most girls don't like LEGO. And LEGO is just following trends in the industry to profit which is what people do, they make things to profit. And since most, or a lot of, young girls love barbie, LEGO is trying to adapt to that trend! (We can't account for the small minority who don't adhere to the mainstream, I've been a victim of "the majority rules" in many situations but it's not something that's going to change. We can't adapt to the needs of every individual who wants different things. There would be endless LEGOs if the company followed that principle.) And she calls that attempt pathetic? Then she turns around and complains that LEGO is too boys exclusive! WTH? She's such a hypocritical feminazi. And she doesn't focus on disparities between men and women, she complains about all the so called "rights" females lack. Especially in a society as open to women that we(including her) live in. She criticizes Mario and Zelda(extremely popular games) for following the damsel in distress trend and for "objectifying" women and then ignores all the females who enjoy those titles! And if she actually did her research and wasn't selecting things to prove her points she would notice that Mario and Link have no romantic connections to their respective princesses(at least in Zelda's main-main-main storyline because I know the storyline is screwed up)! And LEGO makes LEGOs of popular franchises, it's not their fault a lot of these franchises are preferred by males!

And she criticizes these games for their use of stereotypes to make the game interesting, if she wants people to believe her to be credible she'd have to condemn every goddamned author and poet out there or else she's proven herself to be nothing more than a hypocritical, biased, annoying, hobby of reading hilarious comments destroying, feminazi.
