For several years it seemed like the space opera genre has been abandoned.

However Syfy is giving us The Expanse and FX is making Redshirts into a series. There is also going to be a new Star Trek show. HBO is working on making Foundation a series.

On the video game front we have Mass Effect Andromeda and a glut of new Star Wars games.

Paradox, a game studio best known for historical strategy games are entering the space genre with Stellaris.

Disney is giving us Star Wars every year and there is going to be another Guardians of the Galaxy. Luc Besson is giving us Valerian, which is based on a Franco-Belgian comic. And there is a Mass Effect movie in the works.

In literature Anne Leckie's Ancillary Justice has won numerous awards including the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke awards. The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey has also found success.

Would you say that the space opera is going through a resurgence? Just several years ago it seemed like the space opera was dying. In 2011 space opera has declined greatly in literature, TV, and movies. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck were told that the space opera genre was dead when they pitched their novel idea to the publishers. Thankfully Orbit choose to publish Leviathan Wakes and it has been successful. Hopefully the TV show will bring space opera back to TV. In 2015 it looks like space opera is about to make a huge comeback.

Would it be safe to call 2015 or 2016 the year space opera returned? 2015: Space opera strikes back? Did Guardians of the Galaxy helped kickstart this revival?
