Current little project of mine, making a dining table for a friend.

Started with some scrap lumber.

9cEBS2m.jpg

Ran it all through my table saw to get about 1" thick slabs. This increased the surface area by about 23%.

Cut most of it down to foot long segments, and a handful into odd lengths to get a staggered look.

Build a spiffty jig out of some MDF because ever one of these I see people use a bajillion clamps, and there's a better way.

All laid out. I didn't square off all sides of the lumber because I wanted a more defined grove between each piece, this meant that not everything ended up perfectly square.

But the base was square because I planned ahead, so I just had to run it through my table saw and get some nice edges, then put a trim on it.

After about an hour of sanding it started to look a little cleaner, but far from level.

After longer than I cared to admit, I remembered that I had a block plane, and that it was the perfect tool for this.

I still have more planing and some sanding to do, but this is where I'm stopping for the night.

Good call on the jig.

Not enough people appreciate the usefulness of something like that.

You should invest in an electric hand planer.

For larger jobs like this it is a life saver.

Yeah, it made everything so much easier to do.

Honestly, I don't do stuff like this often enough to invest in one.

Fair enough.

My dad has one and it is super awesome to use.

I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

They're pretty nifty tools.

I'm hoping to finish sanding and get it stained today. Possibly get some legs on it, depending on the weather.

Thanks. :)

So after lots of planing last night I took a belt sander and a random orbital to it, started with 40 grit and went to 80. I wanted it to still look rough and worn, but smooth enough that glasses and such would sit on it fine.

Starting on the stain.

All stained.

Bonus, why you should wear gloves while staining things.

Still have to put some polyurethane on it and make legs, but I can't do either in this sort of weather.

Get a really deep red stain and do the dark brotherhood we know on the underside.

Also, make a little hide hole in one of the legs and put an annoy a tron in it when you put it together at his place.

I might have to do that. >.>

Wes wanted to tape a target to the underside to further the armor plate heckling.

Very beautiful!

Thanks. It's turning out really nice.

Oh, ok, you don't know this story. >.>

So Wes has one of these; http://www.ar500armo...ml#.VP3mOvnF9eg

And for the better part of 6 months has been trying to convince Tony to let him tape it to him and shoot him. >.>

Is it that exact one right there?

Same thickness and all in the video?

I don't know that it's the exact same brand, but same type.

If it's the same thickness as that, I'll do it.

If I can save enough by this xmas vacation I want to take the kids to Disney. I'll stop there first so I can Rudys, tookies, twin peaks, and he can shoot me.

I just need to wrap my chest so it'll sit flush properly.

Lol.

I can chain smoke and complain a lot, if that'd help any.

We're about the same height too I think.
