Current little project of mine, making a dining table for a friend.
Started with some scrap lumber.
Ran it all through my table saw to get about 1" thick slabs. This increased the surface area by about 23%.
Cut most of it down to foot long segments, and a handful into odd lengths to get a staggered look.
Build a spiffty jig out of some MDF because ever one of these I see people use a bajillion clamps, and there's a better way.
All laid out. I didn't square off all sides of the lumber because I wanted a more defined grove between each piece, this meant that not everything ended up perfectly square.
But the base was square because I planned ahead, so I just had to run it through my table saw and get some nice edges, then put a trim on it.
After about an hour of sanding it started to look a little cleaner, but far from level.
After longer than I cared to admit, I remembered that I had a block plane, and that it was the perfect tool for this.
I still have more planing and some sanding to do, but this is where I'm stopping for the night.
