Can you realistically call yourself a true "Trekkie" if you do not know who George Takei is?

That depends on whether you consider "true trekkies" to be elitist douchebaskets or not.

Umm.. I think knowing who he is would be kinda obvious.. But maybe that's the elitist In me.. What's up?

Put it this way. There are twelve movies and six different series' of Star Trek. Takei starred in six movies, the original series of the show, and one episode of Voyager. Somebody could easily be a fan of Enterprise, or The Next Generation, or Deep Space Nine, having not seen anything Takei starred in. They still like Star Trek. Separating fans this way is just idiotic.

ya i agree with that i started being a Trekkie watching the next gen. and because my grandfather told me i had to watch OS is the only reason why i know any of the actors aside for Shatner and Nimoy.

Okay, so the deal is, my friend has been calling himself a Trekkie for 5 years or so, he started with next gen, his favorite is voyager and he has seen all the OG as well. I found out last night that he doesn't know who George Takei is. Although he can call him self a fan,I'm just not sure he can call himself a "True Trekkie" It's like me calling myself a True Star Wars fan without knowing who Harrison Ford is, or Carrie Fisher, or Mark Hamill. I wouldn't call myself a Trekkie, but even I know who George Takei is.

Meh dos he know who his character is cause thats all that really matters when it comes to being a fan it shouldn't be i know that persons real name it should be who did he play if you could name off the whole crew for each of the series that you watched then in my book your a true Trekkie. Im a huge fan of doctor who and several people includeing myself conmsider me a whovian and i dont know a single one of the doctor who actors names aside from matt smith and david tennant

I know people who are huge fans of shows/movies and don't ever know the actors names, unless they are already famous.

They can tell me character histories, their families, their relationships to other character, even their favourite colour sometimes.

For them the character is what is important, not the actor portraying the character.

 

I think that firmly places them in to the fan category, even though they don't know all the actor/behind the scenes stuff.

Star Trek is such a huge thing because of all the shows and books that you don't really need to even touch the original series to be a fan.

I would call myself a "true" trekkie and probably the only thing I know about the original series is that is stars George Takei, Leonard Mimoy, and William Shatner.

 

Of course I've probably seen every episode of TNG, DS9, and Voyager five times each.
