Ok.

So, I like Sylv and she's a ranged specialist, and I'm pretty good with her.
I like Tyrael and he's a melee warrior, and I'm pretty ok with him.

I don't like healing, but that doesn't surprise me, I didn't care for it in wow either..

So what other types of roles are there?

I'd like to find one of each I really enjoy and try to get decent with all of them.

Well the 4 main roles are Assassin, Warrior, Support and Specialist

Assassins specialize in doing alot of damage really fast. They're a good source of DPS, but not to be confused with you /only/ source of DPS. While they are squishy and they do alot of damage, many other roles can still dish out as much damage as them over the course of a game, just not as quickly.

Warriors are your tanks, more or less. They specialize in taking alot of damage while still being a very real threat for the opposing team. As a warrior, your going to want to try to zone the opponents with your presence: A lone assassin probably can't kill you before you kill them, so you can be a bully in alot of situations and just scare people away from objectives until they regroup with their team. Once you're with your team, you're going to want to make sure that your key teamfighters, Assassins and Supports, stay alive and can do their job, while trying to disrupt the enemy's key teamfighters with your imposing presense.

Supports... Supports are basically just healers. They can dish out some damage, but most of them shine in healing through it. Healers like Lili and Brightwing specialize in being a passive healer, staying back in teamfights to spam their heal, while others like Rehgar and Uther are front-line fighters, being pseudo-warriors thanks to self-healing, they can heal the team while still threatening key enemy targets.

Specialists are kinda all over the place. The one thing most of them have in common, though, is that if you leave one in lane by themselves for too long, you're gonna have a bad time. Specialist is the kinda catchall category for heroes who don't fit comfortable in the above categories, think Murky or Lost vikings, and also heroes that can fill various roles depending on builds, aka sylvanas and Azmodan. Specialists usually have weird, disjointed kits that you just gotta try to figure out. Notable examples are Gazlowe, who can build specifically to clear the jungle camps, Abathur, the playable buff, and Murky, the constant lane pusher.

Even with the categories, the champions seem to be all over the place. Sylvanas isn't an assassin, but she can dish out alot of damage pretty quickly with the right builds. Malph is a support, but if you build into his W he suddenly becomes massive DPS with a side of heals. Thrall's an assassin, and definitely does assassin damage, but his play style is alot more like a Warrior's, running into the enemy team and just being a hard to deal with threat. It's all really about trying everyone out, seeing who you like and who you don't like.

and Nova. Everyone loves to play Nova

Oooh, neat.

Can you expand a bit more on warrior roles.

Right now I'm doing a more zerg esque version of Sylv with Tyrael.

Being frontline, chipping at the lanes, taking out who I can, pushing back the rest, and getting as many objectives and jungle team mates as possible.

Also, on my list so far pretty much only through the want of their aesthetics, I'm looking towards Kerrigan, Nova, and Hohanna.

I might try Valla again, but truth be told I was shit at her.
Maybe because I was treating her like Sylv tho since it was at the beginning.

Having those three and the one I use now along with the one I should get this weekend. (at 8800 coins, woo) does that seem like a good group, what am I heavy handed with, what am I missing?

I want to try to build a wonder team of assball kicking. >.>

Ah okay

Well, as a warrior, I basically think of myself as the bodyguard for our team's non-tanks. In a teamfight, you're the one who bullies people off the healers and assassins. Assassins and supports don't last long when being focused, but you do, so you'll take advantage of that and try to seem as big a threat as possible. During early game, you're going to lane a little bit, but you're going to want to be at EVERY major map objective. You're probably the biggest component of long, drawn out teamfights like holding objectives, and without you the team's going to be either bullied away from the objective with little health, or just killed outright.

In matches where you're the only Warrior, you're going to want to build survivability. Your skills are going to usually be stuns/slows and self defense that wont gain much from putting traits into them, so you'll go for things like Block, health and health regen. If there's two warriors, kinda get a feel for how much the other person's tanking, but feel free to take more offensive traits to make up for the lack of damage you'll probably have.

A big thing about hots that's different than pretty much every other MOBA is unless your character is /made/ for pushing lanes, AKA sylvanas azmo and other specialists, you're probably more useful just roaming the map for objectives with your teammates. When you're in lane, you'll want to be focused on getting as much XP as possible, as getting 10/20 before the other team is a REAL big help, while taking a couple outer towers probably wont swing much unless you're a lane pusher

As far as must have characters, Lili's pretty much the top tier healer and I recommend anyone have her, just in case. Her depth is pretty much "spam Q and run", and her ult Jug of 1,000 cups can turn a teamfight around pretty hard.

Valla's the must-have dps character, ever since alpha she's been the ideal painting of a damage character: she just stands still and does solid attack damage. She's got a good escape, and two skills that help her secure kills. She's pretty much perfect.

Most importantly tho, play characters you find fun. Many of my favorite characters aren't as strong as they once were, but their unique playstyles are just too fun to pass up.

Huh.

Alright, so as far as big, you mean where the most players are, capturing objectives, pushing back the other teams big mobs, etc?

I need to stop treating Tyrael as a lane pusher, but for ai fights it works so well I can't stop myself.

Sylv I can't play in QM, I just don't have the suitability, maybe if I figure out a better spec for her.

I'd like to have at least one toon to do QM on tho and I think warrior is probably my best bet.

Actually, I might be much better of a healer in QM too because honestly in the ai matches I was trying to heal the larger groups and they would just turn and abandon post as soon as I'd get there.

Let to many an ass flailing.

Yeah, so far hots is def the only one I'm interested in playing.
I have no want to play lol or dota or anything else, especially witnessing the type of people that flock to those.

I may have to give Valla another try then.

She's super cheap and if the skin goes on sale, I wouldn't mind having a second Tyrael toon to play.

I guess I just have to look more into how to spec her properly.

Does she handle anything like Kerrigan?
I noticed they were both assassins.

How do I play that type of toon?

Also, are there any ranged warriors?

Syylvanas was released pretty recently, and she was kinda released as an off-assassin lane pusher. It's really hard to play sylvanas well, even if you're good, because your /team/ has to take advantage of her pushing. If you're pushing bot, and your team groups 4 mid, it makes it really easy for the enemy team to prioritize sending a mob of people at you, so you gotta be really aware of what /the rest/ of the team is doing.

As far as QM toons, Lili and valla are probs my two favorite. THey do their jobs very well, so whatever comp you're paired with, you'll shine. Lili's honestly what I would recommend, even though I know you didn't have a good time as her. Her kit's just perfect for what you want a healer to do. Her Q automatically heals the lowest health target nearby, has a 3 second cooldown, and you can put traits in it to make it heal over time and throw 2 cups. Her ultimate is probably the best healing ability in the game, I'm pretty comfortable to say that it makes your team near-invincible, especially if the opponent cant focus you down.

Uther... I wanna recommend Uther super bad, but where they recently reworked him he's nowhere near as strong as he was. He's still a very strong, frontline fighter, but he's just not as scary as he used to be. His main thing is he's a melee healer, but he's got 2 heals, a massive single target burst heal, and a skillshot aoe heal. Used in tandom, you pretty much make laning a nightmare, you and your partner aren't going anywhere cuz you have 2 heals to use one after another. His third skill is a melee ranged stun, and it's really just for setting up teamfights and making Uther seem like a psuedo-tank, the stun scares most assassins away from him.

For building valla, I always take

1.Rancor: Hatred gives you more attack speed

4. Manticore: every third autoattack to the same target deals 150% damage

7. Searing attack: Activate and your autoattacks cost mana, but deal 150% damage [stacks with Manticore]

10: I almost always take Strafe, it's so hard to land the CC ult in a way that actually matters, but death is the ultimate CC

13: Vs 2 or more warriors, I take Giant Killer, otherwise take Tempered by Discipline to help keep your hatred at 10 stacks [Discipline stacks start to die before the Hatred stacks]

17: As with every Assassin, you're gonna wanna take Blood 4 Blood. It's a hard skill to learn to use, but once you get used to it you wont want anything else.

20: Entirely preference, I like to take Nexus Bolts because if you aren't gonna take an Autoattack buff on Valla, idk who that trait's supposed to be for lol.

And yeah, healing in the ai matches feels silly cuz the AI doesn't acknowledge that you're a healer lol. They're like "Welp, half health time to back" and you're running around tossing cups like WAIT A GODDAMN MINUTE MAN. Works a bit better in QM cuz your team can actually play around your healing, but opponents don't seem to so much lol.

Personally, as far as a gameplay aspect I really prefer HOTS to LOL or DOTA, it's not even about the stigmas attached to the.

HOTS is a fun game, matches take ~20 minutes, and you don't have to read an entire wiki to not get ROFLstomped when you decide to pick a champ that's "Not Meta". All the heroes hold their ground, they're all unique and fun to play, you might have to pay to unlock them but damn Blizz has to make money off the game somehow, and realistically the grinding isn't anywhere near as bad as LoL, just different. In hots, it's more prudent to just complete your dailies than to spend 10 hours straight farming gold for a hero. The game gets updates regularly, even when it was in alpha, and it's just SO MUCH FUN WITH FRIENDS my god.

Mechanics-wise, I love that the game has more depth than "Let the ADC farm, then let the ADC win". All the characters feel strong, and have their own weight. You're not gonna end up playing a 40 minute support game where the most impact you have is a single slow you can use twice before going back to base. You share levels, so you don't have to worry about your team raging cuz you're 2 levels behind for a teamfight because you got laned against a counter and have spent the last 10 minutes walking to and from base. It ends up making the game be more teamplay-based, no single ADC is gonna wipe the opposing team unless the entire enemy team is, like 7 levels behind, at which point they've already lost lol.

Kerrigan is a unique beast. She's one of the only 2 melee assassins, and she's very squishy. She's not played much anymore, because her kit's kinda got some critical flaws. Basically, as kerrigan you're going to want to jump out, jump on someone, and use your 2 CC skills to hold them still while you autoattack them to death. You don't have any self-healing, but damage you do gets a converted to a shield, which helps her stay alive. The reason she's not played much, though, despite being a strong assassin, is she's too easy to focus. Her only mobility skill can only jump on enemies, one of her CC skills brings enemies /closer/ to her, and her stun skill has a super tiny hitbox. Combine that with the facf that you aren't building any shield while running, and kerrigan ends up being a "Jump in and hope for the best" type assassin.

Looking into it, there actually aren't any ranged Warriors. If you want a nice starter warrior, I find that ETC is great for breaking people into the role. He's got 2 CCs, a self-heal, and one of the best ults in the game. He's super tanky, and his skills do well without any traits. Muradin is also a very useful Warrior, but in al honesty I find him one of the most boring champs to play. You just throw your stun hammer and jump around constantly lol.

I completely missed this post, Jaz.

It's super awesome, thank you so much.

My quest today was for a SC and I picked Kerrigan.

Unfortunately I was not able to play her at all like she should be, though I did get a good feel for her.

The major attack she does is incredible.

I soloed the plant boss three times with it at our core.

However I had two AIs that legit did nothing the entire game, so we lost anyways.

I really really like her tho.. and I'm hoping to be able to play her as she's intended because once she gets high enough, she really does hit like a truck, it's awesome.

Second game was infinitely better.

I didn't get the ss right, but I had just gotten the megakill after taking out the whole team.

It was awesome.

I REALLY like her a lot..

I am super tempted to buy her first.

I think I'll see what happens with how far I can get playing her this weekend, but she is way fun.

I just have to remember to group with people and not push alone and she becomes super effective.

LiLi had my back the whole time, it was awesome.

Heroes of the storm is totally free. There was a $40 character/skin bundle you could buy which would give you a beta key, but the game is F2P now.

I like the mounts, but there's not near enough characters I genuinely want in there to justify buying it.

Honestly the mounts are such a minor thing I don't understand why anyone would buy them. $10 for a mount is silly.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Woooooooooooooooooooo

When?

Given the cycle they've been releasing the champs in, and the fact that they've already released Johanna, Butcher, and Leoric, I would say 3 weeks to a month. They usually let the new champ stay in the spotlight for 2 weeks, then a week of other nonsense like skins and whatnot, then big champ release.

Well looks like I'm gonna go recover my Blizzard password again I guess, because I always forget the damn thing.
