Have a buddy and loads of patience.  Livestream/record it if you can.  Preferably, do it while drunk.

And, most importantly, just have a lot of fucking fun.  That's all video games are really for, in the end.

This game is to broken to even play imo. But honestly best bet, for a begginer. Find a server with like 2-10 people just so you can get some loot and have a chance dealing with people. While you are doing this you should get a good idea of controls and items and their efficiency. Once you feel like you have a good idea of getting loot and controls, get an idea of the map. So basically open up the game shift tab, open web browser and go to the dayz online database map. Once you spawn in look for signs. The DB's map shows the Russian translation that you will see on the sign and then the english version. Your best bet for loot is Electro, Cherno, Balota Airstrip (the air strip north of Balota) and the North East Airfield (located north east of map I beleive by Olsha). Then if you want actual fun gameplay which includes pvp go to Berenzino. Berenzino is the greatest place to pvp.

The best melee weapon is the fire hammer. The axe and pic axe are also good. Eat and Drink until you get energized and hydrated.

Best place for weapons and gear are:

Land_a_stationhouse.jpg?version=3583dcd5

fire station

dayz-new-police-station-building-in-cherpolice station

I mean you shouldn't have a problem finding gear unless in a full server. Finding guns is not to bad. The Mosin is the easiest to find and pretty goood imo. The AK and M4 are good but hard to find. The Dayz DB map shows the type and amount of loot also. So just by doing this for an amount time you'll get well off by yourself, no need for your mate. I've played the arma 2 dayz mod a while back and have 33hrs on the SA. Once you get it down, if you spawn on the coast you know without checkng DBs map where to go and what to do looting wise. GL and HF, I hope your PC can handle such a broke game. btw sewing kits fix up your non pristine clothes. It may seem I hate this game, but it is still fun and hope you enjoy it as much as possible, The ETA for this game looks like it will be in 10 years. Considering they've changed the engine so much they must be supported by millionaires.

Well, there's a reason I watch more video games than play them.

(Other than my general lack of funds, of course.)

Well, until you get used to the game, I recommend playing on servers w/ as few people as possible

http://www.izurvive.com/

Find yourself on the map using road signs. Easy way to do it is to leave a town and follow the main roads from the treeline, and if you see a road sign, run up, write down the name, and find it on the map I linked. This will make navigation and finding things like wells much easier.

Go to Cherno, Electro, or Novo, try to loot enough food and water to last you a couple days. Make sure not to loot dead items like weapon cleaning kits, lockpicking tools etc. Things you'll want will be clothes w/ inventory space, a drybag, something to open canned food, and a weapon.

When you go to loot a town, you have two options more or less. You can sprint from building to building like a madman and hope to outrun the zombies after you're done, or crouch and sneak through the city, hitting important building like fire stations, police stations, hospitals, supermarkets, etc. They're easy to find because they're the building that /aren't/ copypasted.

Ideally, you'll want to get enough food, water, and a weapon to go loot the airstrip/ military base. That's the motherload, as it's loaded with weapon spawns and good item drops.

There's much much more, but this'll do good for starting you off.

This advice.  Exactly.

Also, watch some Let's Plays.  I recommend Nova's "Nonsensical" series on the subject.

Forgot to mention Zombie tactics, that'll help you alot.

Basically, zombies operate off sight and sound. If you're in their field of vision, or you're making enough noise they can hear you, they will chase you without end. They sprint faster than you run, but they don't always sprint so, eventually, you can lose them. Honestly, outrunning zombies is a worst case scenario. Makes it so you can't loot at your own speed, and makes you an easy target for bandits.

Ideally, you'll crouch-sprint around the town to be much quieter, although it makes looting take a bit longer. If you find yourself being chased by zombies though, there are two relatively easy ways to get them off your back. One is to run through town: although there are more zombies in town, you can find buildings to duck around. Just sprint and put distance between you and the zombies, turn a corner and crouch-sprint around another corner, this will usually lose a zombie unless you double back and get close enough they can hear you.

Another easy way that takes practice: run up a hill. Neither you nor zombies can sprint if a hill is too steep, but what you can do is zig-zag up the hill, taking it at just the right angle to be able to sprint. The zombie on the other hand is going to just walk straight up the hill, slowly. This will let you easily put alot of distance between you, but can also lead to you getting lost in the wilderness.

DayZ is a sociopath simulator.  People kill you more than zombies do.  Because people can be assholes without real consequences in DayZ.

I've yet to be killed by a bandit.

Just gotta know which places are likely to have people, and how to travel safely

You still have to avoid people.

haha yeah! Anyways, the game gets really fun after you get the hange of it. I recommend pvping in full servers @Berenzino you'll have fun. Once you get good you can get fully looted and in bernzino within like 20-40mins.

Well, if the options are either death or running, our bodies are tuned to pick the latter unless we give up.

It's also why apocalypse stories are just so hot right now.  When the mood of a country is shit, it is reflected in what becomes popular in the culture.
